i *think* the difference is mostly in height, fells are smaller than dales.

Am I right here? hav not looked at the breed stndards but as a Yorkshire born and bred pony fan I this is what I remember.
Dales ponies originated in Yorkshire where as the Fell was bred on the other side of the Pennines (mainly Lancashire). Dales are bigger and are allowed white markings can be black, grey, roan and bay.which are not allowed in excess inlarge amounts. Think roan not allowed for fell.
Irony is I have only ever ridden Fell not Dales ponies!

Looked up forgot brown as a colour!

Yep, you're right JustJas...Dales come from the Yorkshire 'dales' and are on the east of the pennines, the Fells come from the western side of the pennines. Very little white allowed in both breeds.
The Fell is the ancestor of the Dales (according to my 'The Perfect Pony' book). The dales can make 14.2hh, whereas the fell can only make 14hh.
Little white markings for both breeds :D
Sexy breeds though :D

Lovely ponies, not a stupid question though, lots of judges dont know anything about Dales. You can recognise them in the in hand classes at shows because Dales are always shown with ribbons plaited into their tails.
If you want to know more about them try this http://dalesfans.proboards102.com/index.cgi
