my full tb lives out 24/7 atm and still needs to put weight on but rugless. he will come in at night in the winter though. when it was rainy he had a rug on cause of his weight.

my old YO has TBs coming out of his ears and most of them live out, all either ex racers or racers on a break from training.
His youngsters live out aswell (18 month future racehorses)

LucyJ's TB Ciara shares the field with my Jackson - she is full TB (Jackson is probably 1/2 TB) - they all live out 24/7. Took Ciara a while to get used to Scotland, though - although she lived out all the time before, that was in Hampshire - it is typically 3 or 4 degrees colder and rather wetter here. She is absolutely fine, has a LW rug on if it is persistent rain, but otherwise quite happy. I think Lucy intends she should live out all winter with ours, as far as I can see she should be quite happy, I think she is already putting on a thicker coat.
Jackson is only part TB, but lived out all last winter mostly without a rug, or with a LW again when the rain lasted for more than a few hours.
My great-grandad was a well known breeder of racehorses back many many moons ago, back in those days, only the stallions lived in stables, the rest all lived out in fields. It's only relatively recently that TBs turned into horses that had to be stabled all the time...

I think it depends where. TB's would live out happily 1.5 miles from us, down in the valley. But where we are, natives struggle, its the wind and lack of shelter. You cant forget the effect of wind, it can lower the temperature dramatically.

My TB lives out, but then we are in temperate climate. I put on a light-weight rug when temps get below freezing or a big rain storm is moving in.

They most certainly can! Horse owners often keep their TBs out in the day - what difference is it during the night too? In fact, doing this helps the to acclimatise to the temperature change. With decent grazing/space and company, plus a rug or two if necessary (depending on the individual) they can - and do - thrive! I'd definitely, definitely, definitely keep my own out!
This bad habit of "In at night" needs a serious review; is it really for the horse's sake? Or the owners peace of mind?

I'm from New Zealand, and pretty much everything lives outside 24/7 here. Neither of mine are ever been stabled (stationbred and ERP/Welsh X). I had a TB once and he coped fine. He was rugged most of the winter, fed enough hay and coped rather well really. Very rarely are horses stabled here!

Thats good to here! Im in the middle of applying for 5 stables so we have to wait for that to come through and then begin the build so there are no guarantees that we will have stables up before winter. So i was just checking that if I was to get one it would be ok living out until we have the stables for them to come in. We do have a whopping 10/12acres full of grass for just 4 horses to munch on so hopefully forage wont be a problem :p I have been planning the feed already (havnt even got the horse!) was looking at the 365 complete suppliment thing and some kind of alfa based chaff as well as speedibeet and maybe some kind of cube/mix, will decide that later but as long as it will survive the rain and wind (with a rug of course!) until we have finished the stables its all good!
