Bailey doesnt like his magox im adding to his food and is turning his nose up! ive tried swapping him onto a smidge of speedi beet instead of happy hoof and that hasnt worked.the only way he got some down yesterday was to put a handful of ponynuits in a bowl and add enough water for the mag ox to stick and even then he was pulling a face.Is it ok for him to be having a scoop of pony nuts a day - he hasnt lost much weight even on his strict diet.
or is there something else anyone can recommend to disguise the taste of magox.i thought of pure apple juice but wasnt sure if it would trigger lammi?
he was getting a small handful of happy hoof...magox,seaweed,and garlic powder...

Hi,
I havent used magox before is it a liquid or solid? You could try adding mint to his feed with teh magox to disguise the taste(dried mint or failing that just buy a jar of mint sauce in your local shop).

if its liquid Id just mix with water and put it down the hatch. If he needs it with food give a handful before syringing. Its my answer to any liquids as siog refuses to eat food with medicine added.

js not keen on it either, god knows how i'll get it down him when hes up to the full dose:eek::rolleyes:... he likes it best when i make his dinner really wet but you've already tried that so hmmm......

j has apple cider vinegar and is still not keen but its worth a go.

apple squash instead if such a thing exists?! might be able to get sugar free if it does....

does apple jelly exist? you could mix a cube or so's worth... actually, J loves orange jelly so maybe that would work and you can get sugar free. it would also help the magox stick a bit.

let me know if you have any success!

Thought of another - mix the magox with a spoonful of apple sauce before you add it to the feed - you can buy cheap, supermarket own brands - with all the sauces and condiments. If you mix it into the apple sauce first then you won't need as much - yes it's sweet but I wouldn't have thought that one little spoonful per feed won't cause too much damage.....

Mag ox can sometimes be grainy... the pony thinks you are asking him to eat rocks  Many horses find it more palatable if you grind it up to a very fine powder using a psetle and mortar. you can get one from any decent cook shop.

If he is a bit of a porker, mix the mag ox in something designed for laminitics. 'HappyHoof' or similar which is very low calorie and very palatable.

If he has been soured to the mag ox try re-introducing it slowly.

First of all get him eating the base feed. Then after he has eaten it well for a couple of days, start to build up the magox dose. Start with as little as 1/2 a teaspoonful and build up by a very little every few days. He will be eating it well in n time.

My horses all have a very high oil diet and this is how I introduce the oil which is very unnatural for horses to eat. The trouble with disguising the taste is that you wil end up having to fiddle around with addetives for ever! The 'build up' route might take a week or so to get going but far less trouble in the long run.

Horses quite like honey too and as its sticky helps powders to stick to chaffs etc. :)

Yes sugar free apple squash does exist.
Or if your local supermarket doesn't do it (the big S and the big W both do it) then just take some pure apple juice and dilute that down. Its what parents often give young children so it has less sugar then squash.

Does your horse like marmite? My old mare used to love marmite so we could disguise anything with it! And its gooey and sticky so will hold things together.

the mag ox ive got is very fine and ive tried to mix it with happy hoof fairly wet and he ate it the first time then wouldnt tried mixing it with speedi beet instead and he ate a bit but yesterday he clamped his mouth shut-i tried putting it in his mouth and he spat it out!hope you cant OD on the stuff as bruno and smudge scoffled his dinner..
today he has had a handful of ponynuts wetted just enough for it to stick and he begrudgingly ate it only because he was shut in the little compound and wasnt allowed out.I didnt reallly want to give him nuts as they are quite fattening?
might try the apple juice and see how that works.the apple sauce sounds a good idea too..
maybe its the smell of the mag ox thats puttting him off as it does pong when wet..

Careful with anything containing artificial sweetners. Some can be very laxitive for horses. There are REASONS why artificial sweetners aren't used in comercial horse feeds.

he is still eating it with pony nuts so am going to keep going with that until it sends him loopy or he starts to not eat!
then i would probably try pure apple juice...
anyone else had probs? when i looked into it i had good feed back about horses eating it-bailey usually will eat anything!

yup!

mines the white powder mag ox from ebay... since i changed him to happy hoof and balancer he's been wolfing his dinner down, licking the plate and holding it out for more, but since ive added the mag ox he's not finishing it - he eats most of it but leaves the last few bits.

mine can be fussy, but is eating the fine magox powder nicely. i just have to dampen it down a bit, and its mixed in with the topspec and the other supplements.

you could try a dash of applejuice over the food, i did that when ponio refused to eat her bute!
