I am becoming increasingly worried about the amount of sand Buffy could be consuming off her pasture. Everytime I clean her water trough there is a silty residue at the bottom.
How common is this colic and who has any experience of it? Also does anyone use any products to try and prevent this condition?
Thanks

I live in a coastal area, and although sand colic is a concern, I don't personally know of any cases. Here's a link to an article by Galadriel (http://lorienstable.com/articles/owning/300-sand-colic/). Maybe half the people at my barn give psyllium regularly as a preventative, but I elected not to after more than one person told me that their horse had coliced when given the psyllium. Dissolving a lump of poo in a bucket of water to see how much sand sinks to the bottom is said to be a good test--I should do that myself this weekend!
