If we show in two weeks time, will be doing novice and open ridden M&M, and novice and open M&M workers. All four classes are done to P(UK) rules.

Mainly the workers I'm thinking about - double bridle. Brakes were very much an issue at the last show (only had one out of control shot before show cancelled), and whilst the course will no doubt be bigger than 1ft, I would like some control please.

Obviously in the workers anything goes bitting wise, but should I expect to be marked down for using a double as opposed to something like a gag/hanging cheek? Given that one is a technically an open pony bit, and the others are control bits. Obviously will depend on the judge to an extent, but I don't know what to expect from him and I'd like to be prepared.

The novice class is a not to have won £10 one, but assume that because it says novice I still need to go for the snaffle, which may or may not prove problematic! Am going to search the rules in a min.

do check - i'm sure it's PUK that doesn't have a ruling on bits, and the NPS that does. (although i've only ever done NPS classes, so dont; quote me)

Can't find anything, so will check the WPCS rules and then that's good enough for me. ;)

P(UK) rules state any suitable bridle for novice MandM so I would go for what your pony goes best in.

Not many people actually do WHP in doubles but use pelhams etc mainly with split reins, if your horse does not go well in a snaffle and you are happy riding over the course in a double then that would be fine, obviously the judge is looking for a mannerly pony but far better one that goes nicely in a pelham or double that messing around in a snaffle. I am old fashioned but I don't really think gags are appropriate in the show ring but ahanging ckeek or Wilkie is perfectly acceptable.

Ponio does not tolerate a pelham at all. He's not completely settled in the double, but he's improving, and he can go nicely in it. I'm not keen on the idea of using it for brakes, but given his last performance, I need something extra, as not convinced it was a one off.

Jumping in a double isn't my first choice, but it's a long time since I've caught him in the mouth (even bareback) and I'm very good at slipping the reins when neccessary. I can't find a hanging cheek within my price range (with his mouthpiece anyway), and I think I'm better off with the seperate action, rather than having all my eggs in one basket as it were. I hope anyway, I don't want another episode involving a treebranch. :o
