Ok . My filly was liver chestnut at birth. she now to me looks chestnut. BUT each day she is getting more and more white hairs all over her. Today she has more then two days ago etc! she has also started to get them on her neck and face. I have tried to take some pics but there is probably more flecking then is showing up in the pics i've posted. Also her legs are a strange colour, very light in colour indeed. almost like she has four socks but they're not white! i have tried to pic a,photo which shows it up.

she is likely to go roan? if so what colour will that make her and how quickly will she roan out? is she likely to go a different colour? whats the deal with her legs?? will she go back to chestnut? she's 17 months old.

colour breeding wise her mum is a bay (from a black and a chestnut) and her dad a liver chestnut. (from a chestnut and a liver chestnut) On the dad's side other colours in the pedigree are grey& palomino. On the mum's side other colours in the pedigree are black, chestnut roan, dun, grey and palomino.

She might go grey but maybe just roan. As I knew a foal same colour as her and she was ment to go grey.

she can't go grey - they have to have one grey parent to be grey, it can't skip a generation. it's likely to be roaning rather than roan - it's often seen on otherwise solid ponies, but not ture roan.

so will she stay chestnut with a few roany flecks? will that put her down in a showing sense? glad she won't go grey...otherwise i would start to think i have a prob with grey ponies (already have two)

yes, grey ponies are rubbish!!

yes, she is likely to stay that kind of colour, and it wont; be an issue in the show ring as far as i know. you can kind of see on this pic that we have one who has the same roaning on her orange bits - on her flank you can see it looks lighter - she has quite heavy roaning.

thanks a lot :) i'm just glad she's not going grey and that it won't affect her in the show ring either. I don't know much about showing but if she hasn't sold by next show season then i would hope to take her out a bit. (can you tell i'm just desperate to get rid of her lol :p) last week i was saying she's awkward, difficult and hot-tempered this week i think i described her as quirky and fun lol. she's teaching me a lot.

She looks like she has the kind of roaning that goes with sabino, as she has other sabino markers i.e. ragged edges to her socks which are a dead giveaway.

She is a very pretty girl though, lovely eye.

You can get her tested for sabino, not that it makes much difference!

ok at the risk of sounding stupid what is 'sabino'? and what does it mean? Also thats the other odd thing her 'socks' arn't white they are like a extremely pale chestnut colour which i haven't seen before.

As a update though the 'roaning' is getting worse daily! I don't think she is going to end up with a few specs i think she's going to have quite a few. i'm going to try and get another pic in a few days as she seems to get more roan overnight. At what age do foals become the colour they are most likely going to stay? Also if she did go completley roan what colour would she be - chestnut roan?

Can't answer the rest but a chestnut roan is known as a strawberry roan.
(very roaned example below but don't know what colour he was when he was a foal.)

thank you for th epics...he looks lovely, but he does seem to have a dark mane and tail, can a pony be strawberry roan even with a mixed colour mane and tail (predominitely light)

the other things i've noticed on Tifa my yearling while inspecting her for white marks is that she has a 'star' that looks like a perfect star cut in half eg its only on the right hand side of her forehead. also she has a snip on her muzzle and a 'dot' just under her lip. Still can't fathom out her 'socks' though.

Sabino is one of the coloured markings, you get all sorts the main one in england being tobiano and there are lots of overo in america (indian paint horses). If you look at lots of welshies very often they have a white patch under their belly, namely on roans, this is known as a sabino marking, very common in welsh breeds. Have a look at the roan stallion on this site www.danawaystud.com
