With the ragwort being so bad this year its made me really paranoid as to whats in our hay. My YO had ragwort in his field so i'm not buying from him. So i'm looking to buy hay in but now thing what if its in the hay and i don't know!!

I've heard Milk thistle is excellent for cleansing and regenation of the liver. I'm now thinking of giving my lad this as a precautionary measure. I don't think he has any signs of liver damage but it now makes me wonder what he could of eaten without me knowing! He already has a taste for acorns

Does anybody else do this as a pre-cautionary measure or used any Milk Thistle product?:)

Global herbs do a few herbal things that are meant to be good for the liver. There's Restore and a special Ragwort one, can't remember whats in them and never actually tried anything like that.

Oh thanks MelanieD I'll have a look for them. I know Dobson and horrell do a 2.5 litre liquid.

Just looking for peoples thoughts on this :)

If you are worried then you'll just have to thoroughly check your hay before feeding. It shouldn't be too hard to spot in hay, though it is much harder to see in haylege. Global herbs do a product called Ragaid, which contains milk thistle and other herbs so it might be worth getting some of that.

A comment the YO made a while ago keeps playing on my mind, which was

" all farmers sell their hay without clearing ragwort from it 1st "

Now i know he said this to try and deter us from buying else where as he said he'd cleared the field prior to it being cut. I have never inspected hay throughly, haylage i have cos i have to pull it out into net, but hay i just put slices straight in. Makes me wonder what he could of eaten over the years.

I just want to be safe and not put my lad in any sort of danger. And the fact RAGWORT is everywhere means i'm having nightmares!!!

:

Absolutely not true, there are plenty of farms around where there is no ragwort, ours is one, not a single plant, our farmer is good at land management as are the ones around us. Shame we dont have enough spare land to make hay.

If you buy good quality hay from a reputable source you should have no problems at all. Unfortunately there is a lot of poor quality hay around. I have come off haylage this year because of the risk of botulism with the very wet weather. The only good hay I have found is top quality seed hay and unfortunately its expensive.

milk thistle is excellent for liver cleansing, I use it as a really good hang over preventitive !
use restore on the horses every six months or so, really rate global herbs products.
