Hey ya'll! I may be getting a green horse from the government and it is not trained at all. My aunt is going to help me train him but I need tips anyways. Halter and Saddle training tips are needed. Thank you!

When I started my yearling I took him out into our arena (round pen or paddock work too) and had him follow me around. If your horse isn't interested in your presence some treats do nicely to grab there attention. Doing this helps with voice commands such as walk and whoa and it helps them get a respect for your space. If they get to close gently push them away. Eventually they'll learn what is "too close." If your horse doesn't trust people you'll have to build trust with it. Trust is the basis for all training. You can do this by letting the horse decide to come to you instead of going to the horse. If your horse is a little to enthuisatic about your presence to the point that you're in danger I suggest bringing a crop with you for protection. I'm not suggesting you beat the horse with it by any means. Usually just pushing them with the handle or waving it a little will make them respect you.

Hope I made a little sense. This is quite a broad subject. The more you learn about the horses personality the easier it'll be for you find a training method that works for your horse.

I also suggest clicker training. There are a lot of great books out there about it and it's loads of fun!

!Take your time if theres anything I can recommend that would be it, if you do not take your time you will confuse your horse and be unfair... too often do we see trainers who try to rush babies or green horses, and it turns their horses into a nutcase! Also, introuduce your horse to as many things as possible, lould noises..etc that way when you go hacking or to a horse show they are used to everything
