went to tack store to buy tail bandages, spotted some smart ones that girl in store said were leg bandages but that would double as tail ones.

They are the type that have velcro which neatly holds the roll together when not on the horse and rolled up

but i cant figure out how it works when they are on the horse. the velcro end doesnt stick to the bandage itself???????????

im demented trying to figure it out...

Is there a little metal loop to put the velcro through and loop it back?

no i dont think there is just yards of stretchy red bandage with the velcro bit at the end in a sort of tab. they looked so tidy in rolls i was sure i was onto a good thing..

i will post a pic tomorrow and perhaps it will be of use

it will have a loop to thread the velcro through and then it double back on itself i would think, like this

How does the velcro attach when its rolled up?
Is there a tie aswell? With the ones that tie, I tie them but always use tape aswell, I think pretty much everyone does.

I have some fleecy bandages which have a velcro tab - this attaches to the opposite bit of velcro (if that makes sense) which is a little way down the bandage itself. The velcro should normally be on the inside of the roll, so that you can unroll it onto the leg :)

Those sound like velcro tabbed polo wraps.

Make sure you get an instructor to show you how to put them on properly. Uneven tension, wrapped the wrong way or the velcro done up wrong can cause leg injuries.

They sell bandages rolled 'back to front' as it keeps them neat and easier to display and handle in the shop. Its not how they should be 'stored' though.

Before using them you should unroll them, and re-roll by fastening the velcro back onto itself, and continuing that way - so that when you finish bandaging the horses leg the velcro will be on the outside.

To echo the above comment though - maybe you should get someone to show you how to fit them correctly. For excersise boots are far quicker and easier!

Have a look on the bandage at the velcro end, there should be a bit of velcro sewed to the bandage.

When you roll it up, make sure you roll it into the inside of the bandage not the outside.

when you re-roll, roll from the velcro end, and roll so that the velcro attaches to itself kind of backwards and then roll it up so that when you try putting on the horse's leg the bit without the velcro is the first bit to go on.

i am tucking the tab bit in to get it to stick to the coarser part of the velcro

i sense its not right...

A loose bandage or poorly-applied bandage of any kind can slip and sag, and end up putting too much pressure somewhere and cause a bowed tendon. This is a common cause of bandage bows, and it's an excellent reason to avoid bandaging with any kind of a bandage unless the bandages are NEEDED, and unless you know exactly how to apply them, and unless you know how long they may safely be left on the horse's legs. And, of course, you need to check on bandages regularly and re-do them if they've sagged or slipped or been rubbed out of position.

Please, ask your instructor.

Correctly rolled bandages:

I think you had the velcro bit on the wrong side. It is supposed to go around the leg on the outside of the bandage. I am agreeing with others, it would probably be a good idea to get someone to show you how to wrap them on the leg, as if you get them wrong they can slip down and cause sores or become lose and make the horse stumble on them, or if too tight, cause tendon injuries like Styric said.

When you get leg bandages they are always rolled the wrong way round to be packaged.

Basically get a hold of the velcro end on the bandage fold it back until it is flat against the 'sticky' bit of the velcro and continue to roll making sure that you keep it tight and even. You should have the flat end of the bandage at the end.

Once you have placed the gamgee etc on then you place the 'flat' end of the bandage against the gamgee and roll the bandage away from you around the leg and once you come to the end of the bandage you should have the sticky bit of the velcro facing up and then one more turn should bring the other bit ove to stick to it!!

Visualising how you do an every day task is hard lol

Hope this helps!!!
