You can trim his jawline and outer ears, I prefer to leave the whiskers. Mane can be lightly pulled to a length that suits, and although the current fashionable length is quite short, it should be longer than plaiting length. Doesn't mean it should look scruffy. I start by just pulling the straggly hairs, and then level it off, so his stays quite long. The tail shouldn't be pulled, and if trimmed it should be switched (cut to a point) rather than banged, and again whilst fashion is for short, longer is better for a ridden horse. They should be left with full feather.

For showing a Section D - manes should not be too short! Depends on the horse how short the mane length should be - our D horses manes are pulled to about 6-8 inches (dependant on the hose) tails to be free flowing - NO pulling. Tails can be trimmed but not too short! It is NOT suitable for cobs to have their tails cut off to their hocks! DO NOT cut off their feathers!

As for yourself - in hand showing trousers, shirt/tie and waitcoat is suitable.

Ridden showing - Light coloured (beige, canary or corn) jods, shirt and tie - tweed jacket. and usually long leather boots - but for local shows you coud get away with short joddy boots.

go to some shows and take notes!

We show at quite a high level - be we did start off at local shows!
