I'm taking my 5-year old gelding in the M&M novice ridden class.
Am feeling v nervous.
Any tips anyone? Things to avoid?
I wondered if something goes wrong i.e. he canters on wrong lead should I bring straight back to trot or carry on regardless?

I've only done a few little shows so far, but I would think you should bring him straight back to change the lead. Cantering on the wrong lead might give the impression that you're not aware it's wrong!

if i were you i would keep cantering, try to keep your show smooth. but just treat this show as experience :) if something goes wrong it goes wrong, the worst that can happen in that sence is that you may loose a place.
good luck!

Always go back to trot and try again, nothing looks worse than carrying on, it makes it look like you are clueless or the horse is incapable of getting it right.
Best way is to plan ahead so it doesn't happen. Make sure you ask for canter off a corner. It looks great if you can get the right lead elsewhere but is risky with a novice.
Keep your show simple and short. Dont get crowded in the go round, circle to a clear space if necessary.
Dont worry too much, novice classes are for youngsters and the judges do make allowances.
Most of all enjoy it and get lots of pics.

i agree with rtk, whatever you do ,you MUST go back down to trot and ask for the correct lead again,do not panic and dont get flustered ,keep your distance from the other competetors in the go around and above all else smile and enjoy yourself.:D:D
