Ok, when I first started loaning Gem (5 weeks ago) she didn't fit on the weight tape :o pony size, that is, as she's 14.2hh.

She now fits on and is around 572kg, I think....will check though, but a few marks off the edge of the tape!

She is losing it quite steadily, but I read something in Horse & Rider that if a horse loses weight too quickly they can develop a disease in which the fat breaks off into the bloodstream

She is currently out 24/7 in a paddock with enough grass but not too much if you get me. She also has 1 feed a day which consists of Bailey's Good Do-er with a scoop of vitamin supplement.
She is ridden/lunged/free-schooled 6 out of 7 days, she loves her work and looks very depressed on her days off! bless her!

Does this sound ok for her? Any changes?
Thanks! :)

This sounds perfect. Dont worry if the weight is coming off with exercise and still enough food. :)

Crikey that is heavy for a 14.2hh (what breed is she?)!
My 15.3hh middleweight ID x is just over 600kg at the moment and is grossly overweight (not my fault but I won't go into all that now), she is ideally just under 550kg (and remember this is for a big-boned Irish Draught!). My 14.1hh Welsh Cob was ideally about 430kg! I suppose weight tapes aren't all that accurate though. But good on you for trying to do something about it! Maiden hates her grass muzzle...!

I've only just started loaning her. She hadn't been in work for about a year so had developed quite a big grass belly!
I really noticed her weight loss today - if you look at her square on you can't see a belly hanging out at each side! ;)

yes, thats right about the fat in the blood thing. but i believe it only happens when u literally starve your horse for long periods of time. My dartmoor was 285kg when i got her, and it took a very long 12 months to get her down to 212kg. its hard work, but worth it, so well done to u both. its just me who needs to shift the extra pounds now lol
