2 years ago a neighbour turned up with her trailer and 2 wild , unhandled hill ponies. Totally un announced!

We HAD to take them otherwise they would have been put in a hole! ( you'd think folk would stop telling that old chestnut, wouldn't you:rolleyes:)

Anyway we were talked into it and they were added.

First we had to get near them to get a headcollar on, One rugby scrum in the trailer later, we emerged with two wild colts, kite flying on the end of a leadrope!

This is one of them 2 years on. The dearest, sweetest little person you could ask to meet. Took to driving like a duck to water and loving every minute of it.

let me tell you the story....... back in march i started carriage driving and saw a little pony on wally and frances website. I fell in love with this little fella but knew deep down inside that i didnt have enough miles under my driving belt and at that time would not be able to do him any justice. i carried on my carriage driving lessons and unknown to me my husband had rang frances and wally and brought little chappie for me. this was kept top secret for four months while wally and frances trained him. what a wonderful birthday suprise i feel so lucky to have him and will keep you all informed on how we are doing. a big thank you to my husband, frances and wally. i have only known this dear soul for 5 hours and i am already in love.

Chappie has settled in well, and now has a girlfriend that follows him every where, her name is cookie . we did 10 mins of long reining and he never put a foot wrong. Not happy with the harness we have for him, so will not be doing anything much for a while, till i find him somthing that fits better. chappie has already found the feed shed, and deffo likes his grub. will post more pics soon. karen x

Dont really know what to do wally.all looks a bit bulky for him, the only thing that deffo dont fit is his breast collar, both at the breast, and the withers, the more you tighten it the father down the terrets go. not right at all. maybe i should go for a mini shetland one, but then if it comes with a bridle, i know the bridle will then be too small? what do you think???????

Frances

Can you take some photos and Wally will look at them and see.

You can email them to me or to her (see her website).

Cheers

SORTED, bought two leather harness a long time ago at the saddlery auctions, tryed one on by 34inch , then packed them away. seems i bought a shetland one and a pony one, and guess what one i had out on chappie??????? just couldnt work out why it fitted a 34 inch , but was far to big for a 38inch, i know i am 41 years old, but thats to young to be losing it , isnt it:confused:

Wally
21st Sep 2007, 10:49 AM
Don't worry, it's when you forget to do you traces upyou KNOW you've lost it!

Not that I wouod ever do ahything like that you understand! (looking at floor, shuffling feet)

Harness fits a treat:rolleyes: now looking for a bit for him, why do saddlery shops not stock small sizes, i see chappie was driven in a wilson? (they didnt have one of them)i think the liverpool is to heavy and bulky, so asked at the saddlery shop what they thought i should get, they said you should always have a curb action,(didnt think that was right?) and sold me a GLOBE PELHAM, for him , im not sure about this bit at all, its a strong bit isnt it ????? didnt have any other bit in his size, but advice would be very helpfull. so sadly we are not up and running yet,but we have been around the field half a dozen times in our cart:D

Esther.D

You don't always need a curb action but it is a tradition that can take some killing - when I started driving (about 17 yrs ago) you were looked at very strangely if not using a curb of some kind and I saw people pulled in for using a snaffle in driving trials but they seem to be getting more sensible about it these days. Am pleased Chappie has settled well, he is a lovely chap!

Hi thought id give you all an up date on how chappie is doing ? chappie went to his first shetland pony show at the weekend. He was a very good boy ,and i think he enjoyed all the fuss, we came away at the end of the day with 3 fourths, not bad for a beginner, and an other feather in his cap.

Wally
