I enquired about a local livery space today.

After chatting to the owner she said she is going to change her pricing system to include stable and field but add on the cost of feed at the end of the month.

She has changed from the usual fixed month fee because she is worried that the cost of all feed, as well as hay, is likely to increase significantly over the next few months due to the price of wheat/barley/cereals increasing. Quite honestly, I think she is probably right.

However, does anyone know if this will be the case with Alfalfa this year? I expect the price of Alfa to increase next year due to farmers growing more wheat again and thus alfa will become less available.

On another note, there seems to be a change afoot regarding the set aside subsidies. I've heard on the grapevine that due to the pressure on the country to grow more wheat, subsidy may fall on set aside and therefore making it easier to obtain some grazing land. Some grazing land/ set aside is quite difficult to grow decent cereal amounts due to its condition/environment.

It is now possible for farmers to graze their own livestock on set aside anyway due to the movement restrictions with foot and mouth.

Furthermore, with the foot and mouth and cereal prices rocketing it would seem that less farmers will be rearing livestock for food next year and this may free up some land for grazing.
