My pony has been diagnosed with what could be the start of arthritis at the top of one of her pedal bones. The vet would like to try a course of Hyonate injections and I wondered if anyone has used this with their horses and if so what the results were?
Thanks

I haven't used it yet but it's been advised for my mare who's been diagnosed with arthritis in both hocks and both knees (worse in hocks though). I googled it and discovered a lot of info on it in the US, where it's sold under a different name. It all looked positive so I'm going to go ahead, probably Dec/Jan as my mare needs a bit of time off and the vet thinks it'll be better to do it just before I bring her back into light work.

hi, sorry your horse is getting arthritis, my old lady had it too.
my girl started very young after a freak field accident, by the time she was 4y she was a virtual cripple, the vet at the time advise was to put her down, she had osteo-arthritis in hock and fetlock of near hind and fetlock of near fore, if she lay down on the nearside she could not get back up, we had to roll her over- not easy with a 16.3!
then a new vet to the practice suggested we tried homeopathy as a last nothing to lose attempt,
she began on rhus tox and later moved upto calc fleur ( may be the other way round???) she was never 100% sound always slightly unlevel, but you had to really look to see it, & she did not seem in pain, the vet was happy that she did not need painkillers.
she continued to 18y old when she died of other causes, she had 3 foals, did a bit of show jumping, & even a small cross country course, lots of hacking, and general riding,
to those who say it is 'all in the mind', she got her pills in 1/2 a carrot, she never saw them, even if we ran out she still got her 1/2 a carrot but then after a few days she went lame untill we got in a new supply, so she could not have ever known.
if all else fails give it a go, when it works it works well, not always with the 1st prescription and it takes time to build up in the body, take advise as the start-up dose can be complicated.
good luck
