ok dad is very dark bay/black, mother is chesnut. As you can see he started off bright bay but is now a liver colour, do you think he will turn bay?
I'm hoping he'll stay liver.

2 weeks,

4 months you can see much lighter mane,

most recent, taken this weekend looks darker than he is due to poor light, but no black around the eyes,

I'd say bay, I had a youngster who was a similar colour, she ended up quite a nice dark bay:)

now going on those photos i'd have said bay but went to see him again yesterday and he has not got any black points yet (6 months) whereas his full brother by blood lines (by same stallion but out of mine one mum's full sister) has really pronounced black points and mane and tail. Mine is still a liver/brown colour so i'm thinking he's going to be a dark brown when older.

those are black points - definite darker legs above the socks and then lighter at the top of the forearms. other chap looks to be going grey.

they aren't thats the whole point of my post! also the grey has black knees which do show up as darker in the photo. Its hard to tell because the light was fading but hes turning a sort of pinky roan colour around his muzzle and legs and still no black around the eyes. He is the exact same colour as my last foal which ended up grey. no chance of that with this one though thank god although i'm still punishing myself with four white socks!

there's a definite colour change between white and knees and then body - his knees are noticeably darker, while they're not properly black yet. when he sheds out into spring coat i'd bet they'll come out more definitely black. winter coat is often deceiving. the cannon bones look to me more bay than chestnut.

They are darker than the rest of his legs though.

Thing is, from the baby pics it looks like he was born with black mane at least. And a chestnut cannot produce black pigment; it's a physical impossibility. So if at birth he had black points, he cannot be a chestnut.

nope he was born chestnut like a fawn colour. changed to a bright copper with a darker mane, body got darker, mane got lighter now body is getting lighter again lol. His tail is nearly flaxen with just clumps of chocolate coloured hairs (looks like a very bad effort with a paintbrush from a four year old!) in it but mane looks as though he's had platinum hilights put in over a brown base. mothers a chesnut, sire is either a smokey black or very dark bay can't tell the difference between the two to be perfectly honest.
Its going to be interesting to see him in the spring when he sheds his coat again, we should have a little poll who votes for purple LOL:D

That's a very dark bay. You can see on the inside of his hocks and on mane and tail the black points. The sunburnt look of mane and tail are common in youngsters with black points.

yep, stil bay i'm afraid!

this chap has similar coloured legs to yours in this pic, and he ended up the same colour as his mum - very dark bay, almost black to look at.

you see i was always taught that a bay has a solid deep black mane and tail and if not (e.g had coppery highlights etc) was either a form of black (e.g. smooky, red etc), or brown, but then again i have not kept up with all the new data on equine colour genetics.

true if the hair comes out of the skin with highlights - but not at the end of the summer. black hair bleaching is very common, some people even dye their black ponies to stop them fading in the sun.

then the last picture is brown then? looks like brown rather than black at the top of the tail to me thats all!

definitely bay I'd put good money in it, youngsters have highlights sometimes but he is definitely bay and i don't think he'll be dark either just bay.
