Hey.
Looking for advice from you fjord folk of NR.
Right... I think i'll list questions, to make it easier to read and please answer if you can!
Do fjords get trimmed for shows?
If so, what do I trim/ what technique?
What is the best way to make the mane from a long, thick mane to a neat crescent shaped cut?
What do you suggest is the best clip for Aram, who is ridden but is turned out during the day (during winter)
Thanks for any help in advance!!:p
oh yeah, heres a few pics just for fun.

Aww he looks just like Questy:http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o236/libbyo_photos/questyridenday1.jpg
We clip out for shows and clipo manes into a cresent shape. I did a search on the internet for it, and eventuaslly found a page with diagrams. Cant remember what page it was though.
Questy this year is unclipped as he is turned away naked, but Lena has a head and body clip, legs left longer.

Hi,
There is a good explanation of mane clipping on this link
http://www.nfhr.com/PDF/NFHR%20Show%20Rule%20Book.pdf
My mare has the 'Dutch' clip where the dark hair stands above the guard hair. The Norwegians trim the mane all to the same length.
Fjords do not get trimmed for shows - maybe a tidy up on the face.
As for clipping for management purposes, I am not intending to clip mine but then she is only in light work and living out 24/7. If you need to clip perhaps a neck and belly or chaser clip would do the trick.
By the way its really important they stand still for the mane trim so tie him up tight and good luck :)

I find that tieing them up tight makes them fidget and fight the feel of the rope. All our lot just stand and doze while a pratted about with the nail scissors making the mane tidy. I astart off with the clippers and take it to a vague length then scissors to smarted and finish.
That link is for an American breed society, so the rules and customs will be different from that of the UK and Europe.

Thanks guys!
I've been meaning to do his mane for some time, but the yard clippers are broken and just being replaced.
So, with his, what I call 'leg tufts', i do not cut them then? They are hairy parts on his lower leg?

I did my Fjord mares mane in a traditional cresent...and kept it trimmed that way. Even for a Fjord she had an unusually thick mane...took me a little over 1 hour with my really good sewing scissors or 1/2 hour with the safety tipped electric sheep clippers.
Had to do it every few weeks.
For manes that have fallen over.. only way I have found to get them going in the traditional way again... is clip the whole neck like you would do a bridle path and that short.. let it grow up to the height you want.. then keep it clipped.
