Anyone got any good pics of examples of red dun horses?
Also if anyone knows the genetics of the colour, ie what colours parents could be to produce this colour, I would like to know what they are:)

i don't know much but thought i'd mention chev incase she does a search for her name. she knows a lot about the genetics. If you look at jojoba's recent posts there are a couple of links to the genetics on there. :)

Our new filly is a red dun. It's beautiful colour. :) Red dun is considered to be a chestnut base with the dun gene; so there are no black points. The genetic code for a solid red dun is given as: ee, CC, D, gg, ww, toto
So to break it down by gene -
a) ee - Homozygous black recessive gene. Black pigment in skin, but no black hair
b) CC - Homozygous creme dominant gene. No creme dilution.
c) DD/Dd - Homozygous/heterozygous dun dominant gene. Dun characteristics present (eg. dorsal stripe).
d) gg - Homozygous recessive grey gene. No graying.
e) ww - Homozygous recessive lethal white gene. Horse is full pigmented.
f) toto - Homozygous recessive tobiano gene. No tobiano colouring present.

:D Thanks again. She's out of an overo Paint mare and by a solid bay KWPN stallion, so colour was something of a crapshoot. We're quite pleased with her though!

Simple way to produce true red dun is:
Dun on chestnut.
There is currently no test for the dun dilution at present, nor grey but they are being developed by UC Davis in the US.
Darby is absolutely stunning btw does she have the splash gene given her facial markings?
If you go to this website:

Scroll down to Aio - PSL stallion, he is true red dun and rather stunning, click on the other photos to see classic dun patterning of dorsal strip, leg bars and mottling.

She seems to fit the criteria for splash. :D White legs, erratic white spots (but no white "flecks" like sabino), blue eye, bald face... Hard to say though as there's no test for the splash gene.

Thank ambatt. I only see her on weekends, but every time I see her, she's sprouted another two inches. :D
Sorry, No_Angel! I didn't mean to derail your thread, was just showing some red dun pictures. :o

This year we bred two red dun fillies:
http://www.varkiesstud.co.uk/html/verity.html
http://www.varkiesstud.co.uk/html/veka.html
Verity is out of a chestnut mare & by a chestnut dun stallion, Veka is out of a bay mare & by a red dun stallion.
To get a red dun, all you need is the ee genes & a Dd or DD - you could get it by crossing any bay/black/chestnut based horse with any dun - obviously your odds are only guaranteed if you have a definite cross of chestnut parents, and with a homozygous dun - which we can't test for yet!
