Strangles....

Please can you give me the symptoms of Strangles as the is a lot about I think we should all keep our eyes open!

It takes a few days to start to show symptoms, about 8 -14 days.

The horse may show a temperature and be generally low. He may be off his food. He may start with a cough. This may go on to nasal discharge of a thick sticky snot. Swellings may appear in the jaw line. These may burst and drain that thick sticky puss, which is what may be coming down the nose.

If there are swellings in the throat it is best to get them to burst and drain with hot fomentation, the sooner they burst the sooner the airways become clearer.

It can be mild and only show as a cough and a snotty nose or become really serious and abscesses may form in the major internal organs which is really serious.
