My loan mare has a sugar intolerance (apparently :/) but she is losing weight at the moment, it isn't rapid but shes JUST about right and I don't want her to lose any more.
Because of the sugar intolerance I'm currently feeding:
*3/4 scoop KwikBeet (unmolassed sugar beet).
*1 scoop HiFi Lite.
*3/4 scoop D&H 'Build-Up'.
*Garlic.
*2x small supplement-scoop of BOSS.
What do you think to her diet? I keep changing my mind on what to feed her :(
Help?!

Hi, my pony is sensitive to sugar, it makes her really itchy. She is old and keeps condition ok in winter, but woudnt want her to lose any more.
Last year she was on:
Alpha A Oil (i phoned dengie and this is the only chaff they do that's 100% sugar free)
Allen and Page's sugar and cereal intolerance mix.
Dengie alfalfa pellets (soaked) (which are unmollassed, and can be soaked
like s.beet)
Her itching stopped after being on this diet for 2 weeks, i was really pleased :D
Hope this helps ;)

Wow thanks, I never knew a sugar intolerance mix even existed! Is it expensive?

www.simplesystem.co.uk
All their feeds are fibre-based with no sugar, do a NR search as there are several owners on this site who use Simple systems. Even Hi Fi Lite contains 4% molasses, but whatever changes you make to the diet be sure to do it gradually.

You could try adding 1-2 cups of corn oil (er, I believe that would be a bit less than a pint)to her diet. You can feed 2+ cups BOSS.
You could also search for a weight gain supplement. I don't know if they ship to you, but smartpak.com would allow you to search for a weightgain supplement, and it would show you all the ingrediants, and you could see if they sold it by you.
Hope you can find something that works...

Excuse my ignorance, but what is BOSS?

Second vote for A&P Intollerance mix.
Ed used to loose weight big time in winter despite previous owner pumping huge amounts of hard feed in to him.
I discovered his sugar intollerance by trial and error. After putting him on the mix and Baileys Outshine he gained weight nicely on around a third of the quantity of hard feed.
I would give the two a try. :D

Sugar intolerance is a misconception, what you are actually describing is Equine Diabetes (in older horses, it is the same as type 2 Diabetes in humans).
The Grey pony in the stall next to the ILPH stand at the YHL over the weekend had Equine Diabetes (just behind the arena as you walked out towards the car park 5)
I spoke to its handler and It was on the same medication as me (called Metformin) but at 5 times the dose due to bodyweight. This drug reduces the bodys conversion of carbohydrate sugars to Glucose, and also by reducing the intestines absorption of sugars generally.
The reason why the body weight in your horse is dropping, is because its cells cannot absorb the glucose, which then stays in the blood until its excreted by the kidneys (there have been instances where some diabetic teenage girls have been skipping insulin injections to lose weight)
Make sure that its got access to a good supply of clean water at all times, and exercise will also help things !
As a Diabetic you can eat sugar based products, but it is cumulative in the system !
