since im unable to get topspec leisure and alfa-oil at the moment (not for another couple of weeks), but still need to get various supplements into (fussY!) ponio ...
what i managed to obtain is ...
hi-fi lite and
baileys meadow sweet (pasture mix, basically, shes had it before eg last summer)
she'll be getting a small scoop of hi-fi lite ...
a handful of the meadow sweet to make it taste better (so she eats it so she gets the supplements ... tried mint powder, she hates it!)
any good?

Sounds OK to me for what that's worth. I'm not sure the Baileys stuff would be great fed in large quantities with what's in it but I doubt a handful is going to be a problem whatsoever.

I personally wouldn't feed it myself, due to the fact it contains cereals, but if Angel has no problems on it then it should be okay I guess

she never got more than a handful of it per day last year and it never sent her loopy or anything. it doesnt have oats in it, but (if i remember rightly!) barley.

My understanding is cereals aren't that good for laminitics because of the starch content. I doubt a tiny bit will do anything unless she's borderline though, just keep an eye out for pulses etc.

i doubt she is borderline, ie she lost a fair bit of weight and has kept it off (restricted grazing etc). hope it'll be ok until i can get topspec again.

Meadowsweet is probably full of sugar - hence the name. Not for laminitics.

Have you tried Happy Hoof Dieter? We use that for our lami ponies and they gobble it up. :)

i havent. but unfortunately, im quite limited in what i can get hold of (i dont drive, local tackshop has VERY small selection and it took me 3 years to find a company that deliver ... so have to take what they've got. fingers crossed my delivery goes ok on monday!)

10 minutes in cold water, and i think 7 minutes in hot. I started my laminitic on a coffee cup sized amount :)

The best feed for laminitic animals (and I have a pony which developed this condition 3 years ago and have managed to prevent further attacks) is:
1. high fibre in the form of hay
2. a mineral lick such as Rockies
they do not need much else really at all.
Cereals are not suitable and Alfalfa i(lucerne) s to be avoided
In the winter you can give Hi Fi lite with some cider vinegar
Email me if you want further info

I have a shetland who had laminitis 17 years ago & cushings for the last 4 years.
I feed him on speedibeet & soaked hay with access to grass limited by the weather. He has had no symptoms for 3 years now (fingers & toes crossed).
All of the manufactured feeds have some sugar in them - they use it as a binding agent- anything with "ose" on the end means its sugar.
Hi - fi lite has alfalfa in it Texel.
