Hi all

I have just brought a lovely new horse who is a haflinger, the only problem with her is that she has sweet itch.

I rug her up all the time, she is stabled in the late afternoon until late evening and I have tried lods of creams totry and relieve this.

I have found best for her is having her fly rug on all the time and putting Benzoe Benzoelate on her affected areas.

I would just like to ask what tips do you have and what do you recommend.

Thanks in advance.

Ah poor mare, haffies have such thick dense coats. Did you know before you bought her? Have posted a link above, gives lots of information and some ideas on what's current practice, seems like quite a few of us have had to battle with SI this year ( some for the first time, including me).

I do the same as you, also use Avon Skin so Soft (green bottle) as a fly repellent, that plus the Kill-itch (benzyl benzoate) has kept mine comfortable for the latter part of the the summer. Affected areas ie mane, dock, neck are washed weekly depending on weather, just to remove greasy lotion and dead skin esp in her mane, then I treat her maybe 3-4 times a week.

There are a variety of supplements, including the more unusual such as marmite, global herbs 'skratch' seems to have helped my mare, although it took a few weeks to kick in.
