appaloosa is a breed, the colours are few spot, blanket spot, leopard spot, snowflake etc.
I have just got an appy filly, haven't had much experience with the breed as a whole, but everyone i have met has been full of personality but very willing.

thank you shes a sweetheart. Shes actually half criollo, but she takes after her sire who an appy, dam is appaloosa colouring.
on her sires side she has american horses and european horses. Her sire is more a european type horse (warmblood in apperarance) than a stocky quarterhorse type.
she is such a people orientated horse, she is very curious and has great qualities from both breeds in her, although she will always be an appy to me:D

I owned an appaloosa for many years, a long time ago, when they were really quite unfashionable. Feel like I was a bit of a trend-setter. If my horse was anything to go by, they are the most wonderful horses. He had brilliant feet, legs (never lame), wind, confirmation - all of it 100% sound. He could jump, was willing, and always safe. And such a character. I still miss him. I'm always drawn to the ads in H&H for spotted horses. Maybe one day...

I've had 2 Appys. They are fantastic. Pecos could be ridden in a headcollar throught the centre of town. We once went for a walk in his h/c, lead rope one side dog lead other.:D Met a pal who decided to jump on behind and we went for a stroll through the local park to see what was going on. A bike trial thingy, we watched it over the fence and then ambled back home through the traffic.:D And I know I should be more careful this was in my mad youth. Please do not copy!!!:D:D
Saddly I lost him with grasssickness aged 6. I've been looking for a cuddy like him for 30years:D
And yes you can get Appy colours in other breeds, the Nez Peirce Indians of Idaho bred Appys and selected for spots etc. You can also get a pedigree Appy thats a solid colour. There was a pure balck Appy bred up here a few years ago. Saddly I had no money and couldn't afford him at that time:mad:

The Appaloosa is a breed, but it's also used to describe the spotting pattern complex of genes (known as the Lp complex).
So, you can have breeds which are not Appaloosa breed, but who do have Appaloosa patterns (like the British Spotted Pony).

Yes, just because there are spots it doesn't mean that they are an Appaloosa. The Appaloosa is a breed. They were originally bred by the Nez Perce American Indians who lived by the Palouse River hence the name A Palouse Horse corrupted to Appaloosa. You can get solid colour Appy's. I have an American registered Appaloosa and a wouldn't swap him for the world. For more information on this wonderful breed look on the APHC website (Appaloosa Horse Club).

Actually, the Spanish conquistadors introduced the appaloosa horse into the US. The Nez Perce Indians developed a comprehensive breeding programme of the Appaloosa horses. The cavalry almost wiped the breed out by infusing them with draft horse blood to slow the warriors down so they couldn't hunt or fight. They were eventually subdued into quiet farming. It wasn't until the 20th Century that the Appaloosa Horse Club was developed in order to promote the breed and aimed to refine the build by outcrossing to QH's, arabs and thoroughbreds. Luckily the colour gene remained prevalent.
My appaloosa is registered with the NZ Appaloosa horse association. :)
For more information on colour genes, these guys have been doing amazing research and they even used my horse as an example several years ago.
