Well after a long time wishing (about30 years) I have finally got my own horse. I have been learning the basics of riding on my daughters horse for the last 8 months (very basic I might add - still only trotting), OH weakened and let me have one of my own. We picked him up last week only to unload him from the float and notice a chunk taken out of his pastern so havent been able to ride him. There was nothing on the float to injure him so it appears I didnt look hard enough when I picked him up - too excited I guess!!!:D
OH is almost as attached to him as I am but wont admit it...
He is a 15hh, 5 year old bay with the most adorable brown eyes - Quarter Horse x Australian Stock Horse Gelding. He was raised and broken by a local guy who has the best nature with horses and normally I wouldnt even consider a 5yo but this guy has really done heaps of work with him - you can crack a whip, throw a raincoat over him etc while on his back and he doesnt flinch.
We are using this time to bond anyway so hopefully it will mend soon - just seems to be taking forever. If anyone has any idea of a quick healing method please let me know!!!! I'll try and post some pics of the wound in the next couple of days but in the meantime, here are some pics of Ricochet ("Ricky" for short).
So here are the only photos of him that i have at the moment, and will try to get some of his wound as soon as i can.

:D Thank you for the lovely comments!!!
Troi - I dont think that he could have stood on his foot because it on the outside of the nearside foreleg. If it was the inside it would have made perfect sense!:p

Congratulations. I hope you have a great time together.
Great name, I had a Ricky too, but he was Rick O'Shea for shows - because of his Irish ancestry.

Does he have shoes on?
It's possible that he was itching the outside of his leg with his other front leg (i've seen it happen, quite interesting to watch them balance :p) and the trailer's gone round a corner, he's lost his balance and taken a chunk out of himself?
Bless, he looks a sweetie. Good luck with him :)

Thank you all once again for the lovely comments!!!:D
Ive just came back from having a small ride on my daughters horse Kenny, however this small ride was on the lead with only a little bit of trot, because we moved all four horses out to the new farm on Sunday last week and Kenny held his head high and strided out a fair bit, so I just kept on the lead to be safe for my first ever ride on the new land and there is known to be a few snakes on the land, and Kenny doesnt like snakes too much!!!
So I might have a go off the lead next time, just while I am getting used to riding again!!
Ricky had his dressing taken off last night as it was rubbing on his wound, POOR BABY!!!. Today when we cleaned and sprayed it, it was all scabbed up. So here are a few pics of his wound today:

He's gorgeous, you lucky woman! But can I just say, and please don't take offence (no pun intended LOL) that horses can easily hurt themselves on barbed wire, and its easy for a horse to put it's hoof through the pig wire too. Anyway, I hope you both have lots and lots of years together:D

Thanks Soozy! I am very lucky!!!
Yeah, we figured that it was from the wire in his previous field as he had it when we got him.
All our fencing is wire - but we put fencing of just electric fencing on the inside at three different heights to prevent these injuries! It is run from a powerpoint.

Phew Horseymum! Its just I have a thing about barbed and pig wire  When I was on holiday a few years ago, we loved seeing the mare and foal in the field next to the cottage where we stayed, the foal was beautiful and only a couple of months old, he caught his leg in some discarded barbed wire and had to be put down. It was awful and we were all in tears.
Hows Ricky's leg now, it looks really nasty.

We are now removing all the barbed wire and putting up normal wire, as we decided that we dont want vet bills.
Also, our horses now have SHELTER, its only a shed trype of stable, but it is attatched to the paddock, so we can open up a gate and they have their field and a shelter or we can lock them in and have a stable!!! It also has a gate that opens so that we can lock them in the stable but they have a small area of open sunlight. Sand being ordered this week to put in so that they have bedding that they like to lay down in!!! AND ROLL!!!
Rickys foot is getting on really well. Not lame anymore and has white skin over the top, it is slowly getting better!!!
