I would leave her in her natural state- feathers, long mane/tail.

If shes looking a little scruffy then you could tidy her up by pulling just enough to smarten her up. Generally though, i think natives are supposed to be shown in their natural glory-

Hope that helps.

Welshies are supposed to be shown untrimmed. Don't plait her, but most people do tidy them up a bit; her mane and tail shouldn't be pulled exactly but some tidying is usually done.

She should be shown in a white halter (webbing or rope) or an in-hand bridle. Most mares wear the white halter.

A flat white webbing halter is nice.Don`t cut her tail straight across it should be a swish tail pulled nice and neat at the top.Trim the hair in her face so you can see the outline of her face.Pull all the sunburnt bits of hair out of her mane.Keep the length but take the thickness out.You can do a long plait behind the ear to show off the face helps the bridle or halter sit flat.Don`t touch her feathers

I always do a single plait at the top of my boy's mane, and plait some red ribbon into it to compliment his colour.

Bridle or halter, it's your choice really. I showed my 3 year old in a bridle as it was his first show and i wasn't sure how he's behave.

Make sure you practise trotting up inhand at home. When i had my boy out the judge got rather impatient with one exhibitor who couldn't trot his mare inhand at all. Also, familiarise yourself with the class format and practise standing horse up at home. Showing them off correctly can make all the difference ;)

They are suposed to be shown in natural state but at a lot of county shows they have pulled mains and clipped whiskers off.

we take the whiskers off and make sure the mane is quite short- shows off a well put together neck or hides a bad one so its your decision.
the tail is usually just below the hocks (as shown on the pic above) because it carries better and shows that the horse is well put together again.
It the horse is cow hocked or has thoroughpins etc then leave it a bit longer.
just make sure it isnt cut straight accross at the bottom!

Yes, although the SHOULD be shown in a natural condition, they very rarely are. The idea is to trim them in a way so they still look natural, by feathering the tail, shortening the mane a bit. I trim the jaw line but leave whiskers on, maybe sometimes shorten them a bit.

well we breed and compete welsh cobs both under and in hand...i would BURN her chin hairs(doesnt hurt), pull main, level(NOT short or TOO straight)cobs are supposed to have a quite thick flashy mane! Never EVER cut their tails straight! pull his tail with a knife/ comb so it is layered and should be atleast as shoert as his hocks! Tidy up his feather! cut the baby feather down the cannon but do not cut any off the fetlock you want that as big as possible to make their legs look heavir and bolder! Also cut their stray ear hair:) hope i cud help xxx

Show them natural.

Their tails need to be shorter than their hocks or the same length as. I was always told if their tails is really long and covering their back legs then you are hiding something on the horse.

We pull the ends of the mane but not straight and leave evrything else as it is.

Good luck with your shows.
