ok, so i watched a introductory dvd that the parelli website sent me for free and although a lot of what they do is something what i do already without the showmanship but some of the things i do i think to the GENERAL horsey public is seen as wrong eg. i generally lead a pony/horse on a longish line and expect it to follow without me looking back but if i feel my space is being invaded i will 'tell' the pony to get back by turning facing and moving it back with body language. now parelli says thats one of his 'games' (which i have been doing for years without knowing anything about NH!!) Anyway a lot of the dvd inspired me to take it to a higher style (would love to be able to do the higher stuff eventually) and also help me to realise i'm not WRONG with stuff i do. Now the problem.......LACK OF MONEY. also i'm not convinced a lot of the parelli equipment is worth the extra money...i would consider a halter but the carrot stick to me just looks like the schooling whip i already use as a arm extension? and the carrot stick with extension is basically how i use my lunge whip  Also i just haven't the cash for the parelli dvd's so basically is there anyway i can further myself and my horses without having to buy them? Maybe different books? also realistically HOW much am i looking at spending if i do HAVE to buy them? i could ebay some stuff but thats meant to be paying for my stallions castration lol :o:rolleyes:
So anyone do NH on the cheap?

You can do a lot of similar stuff with the same objectives for the price of a few books and a halter (if you feel you need it). Kelly Marks and Richard Maxwell amongst others both have good books out with the whys and wherefores clearly explained and lots of different exercises to work through.
There are lots of good resources on the web too :)

Here's a good link to get you started.....

Whatever route you take or method you choose, make sure you buy a good quality halter that fits well...you could improvise with the rest of the stuff.
My first carrot stick was made from an old fishing rod. ;)
Good luck. :)

I have got a lot of IH books if you ever want to borrow them to get you started and you can tie your own halter with rope from B&Q not sure but it shows you how on the internet

Thank you for the replies....
India - I will definitely give those games a try, thank you SO much. it's a great starting point.
I love my birth to backing Richard Maxwell book but i would never have said he was a NH person?? i have always used a lot of his techniques in starting youngsters though.
Shandy - Thank you very much for your kind offer, it would be great if i could borrow some books or even if you let me know which ones were good and i could see if my library has them? I have no idea where abouts you are apart from essex! I must say though if you are ever near me or live close enough i would love to meet up with you.
I think i'm going to buy a halter each for them (just one for now) as i'm not too great with knots and improvise with the rest of everything.
I must say though after being inspired by the Parelli dvd i got free i did go and see my older mare Lacey to see just how far i could take it as the Parelli's used their methods (which are similar to my own anyway) in a different way to me. Well in her field i asked Lacey to do things i hadn't asked quite in that way before and i found that by mirroring me she would walk, trot and canter next to me depending on what my legs were doing and if i jogged on the spot with high knee action (must have been laughable to watch) she trotted on the spot (wouldn't quite call it piaffe lol) needless to say she thought it all a great laugh.
Lacey's a funny old girl though as she has ditched 3 sharers in the last 6 months who have all thought of her as a nightmare although me and my 8yr old daughter (and my novice adult friend) all call her a novice ride!

The link below shows how to make a knotted rope halter, but I'm not sure how easy it would be. Having had a look at the Parelli site in the past, all the stuff looks to be very expensive and there's not a lot of advice available for free, but it all seems to point you towards buying the videos. Good marketing I suppose.

I started with some lessons..... I teach a bit now, so after one lesson, people usually have enough things to work on themselves for the next 3 or 4 weeks.........so maybe a lesson or two with lots of homework?

Hi could you tell me which DVD you got please, I have a freebe on the 7 games but have not had time to use it:eek::eek: Work always gets in the way.
Born free.
Forced to work :D
I'd love to do the ground work with my youngster that you have done with Lacy.
I had my two oldsters out in the school one day,(waiting for farrier) leading them doing dressage figures in walk and trot, one on either side of me . They were really good at changing pace with loose lead ropes after a while, It was fun:)
Is this what you do?

can't remember what dvd was called but it was the freebie one they send from the website. The groundwork i've done on Lacey is pretty much just getting a bond. she tends to follow me in the field anyway and i was lucky in that her early career was driving so she spent a lot of time on longlines in her youth and listening to what you were doing. Because she follows me i only really tried to see if she would follow my actions and she does...when i trot she trots, if i trot more upright, she collects if i extend she extends. she loves it because she thinks it's fun:D .

You dont have to buy the halter or the stick...a cheaper rope halter will do and so will a schooling whip or a stick you find in the woods. (schooling whips will have to much bend if your horse isn't very sensitive when you apply steady pressure).
What I did was I invested in the level one packet. I found it much cheaper on ebay. When I was done with level one I sold it and bought level two with the money I recieved for the first one.

I did buy all that stuff, a bit at a time. The rope halter thoguh, I bought a cheap imitation and it wouldn't stay tied. :) It was this nylon junk thing that would untie the knot (NOT COOL with my arab going "right brainy" back then.) hehehe
I have to say some of the parelli stuff did wonders for us. Relationship wise, it made a relationship when we had none. (because I had just bought him) One unexpected thing was it completely broke my ability to lunge. (yes with parelli you don't lunge anymore, you circle) the problem with that is they are allowed to turn in. He would turn in and rear or buck out at me:eek: Ok I know that happens and there are further levels to deal with it, but it scared the snot out of me and said NO MORE. I instantly moved barn and got a trainer involved. LOL
I still use the games, but like a salad bowl style where I pick and choose what works on him. And that irritates hard core parelli folks just as bad as none at all. hehehe

how come i only just found this??:D i'm glad im not the only 1 who wants to do parelli but ant got no money! i use the Parelli website (in-particular, the 'problems' section) & i watch video clips off the horse & country tv website :D (i prefer getting info from the scource, so it can't be misinterpreted) & it's really useful. i intend on making my own "carrot stick" & my own halter - got to find the time to do it, mind :p so then i can just nick a rope from somewhere  (oj lol):p & i've got everything i need:D - all without spending an arm & a leg! :p;)
