Who else has haflingers out there?
Here is my boy. His registered name is Motley RR but we call him Toby around the barn. He is 13.3 hands high and will be 7 years old in April.

I used to have a Haflinger (in the mid 80s). She was called Brownbread Lace. Very pretty pony, very intelligent but boy was she neurotic!!

Neurotic? LOL - care to share any stories? I find my boy tends to be too smart for his own good.

I used to ride a haflinger a while back. He was lovely but damn was he stubborn! One day we were riding round the school when he stopped i did everything i could to get him to walk on.. my friend and her dad then had to chase him to get him to move!!
He had a fab jump and would do anything for you.. i loved him to bits :D

They are so cute. I love Bimble's wide blaze.
Toby showed his stubborn streak tonight. I rode him a bit bareback and he would go around once and then right back to where the mounting block is and stand there waiting for me to get off. I had to keep convincing him the ride was not over. He was worried he was going to miss dinner. *sigh*

having trouble with pics tonight - suffice it to say she is quite the character and very opinionated! But a good girl for all that, she is a people horse and loves anything she thinks of as a game.

When he had our new saddle, must admit, haven't got any more up to date pictures!
Had her since April this year. She is very sweet.:)
All pics are very cute!

My lovely mare is Kimta. She is 7 yrs old, has bags of character and is very loving. Because she is broad, it feels as though you are riding a huge horse, with a long, comfy gait - no bouncy pony trots! Her canter and gallops are awesome! She had her first foal, Teatime, in April and he has a super temperament. Dad is a quarter-horse and Teatime is now a glorious chestnut with blonde streaks in his tail. Kimta is a great mother and is less feisty with us since foaling.

I'm looking for a new saddle for Kimta - I bought a hafflinger one but it wasn't good and a friend has taken it, which suits me fine! I'm thinking of going treeless - any thoughts on these? If not, what saddle do you use?
thanks

In August I bought a 13 yr old Haffie x. Dont have a clue what the cross is. She had just come in from Holland and didn't understand English, so I learned a little Dutch. She's about 14-14.2hh, called Janne, very opinionated, totally laid back about everythhing (almost horizontal), but she's "scared" of pink flowers :D
Vet just confirmed she isn't in foal (thank God). She's just fat! So she is now a hard working girlie.
I posted a piccie of her in the thread "My new Girlie" in the Mature rider forum. The saddle I have is a Thorowgood Maxam cob extrawide, but I have a feeling that I might need to get a narrower one as she loses some of her podginess. Once she's a decent weight, I'll get a leather saddle cos I struggle with synthetic girth straps. I'll try to find a piccie of me riding her and you can laugh at width of her and me doing the splits.

JoKim I also have a Thorowgood Cob Maxam XW for Liesel which I use most od the time as we are trying out faster paces and jumping right now, but I also ride her (and we backed her) in a Treefree Dartmoor saddle, and can really recommend them. I got mine secondhand.
Theyre made in the UK and they dont have the stirrup leathers going right through the top of the saddle like a lot of treeless's (which can cause pressure if you have weight in the stirrups and make it harder to mend). They have removeable (velcro on) knee rolls too which are great for secure feeling. And the whole thing just feels quality and vvvv comfy.

I've got a Saddle Company cob saddle for my haffie and that seems to do the job.

Oh the saddle woes fitting a haflinger. Mine got wider again this year and his saddle is too narrow now. Bareback riding now until I can get another one.

Thanks for this. Which one do find has the better leg position?
Trixie
13th Nov 2007, 09:46 PM
No-one who rides Haffies can have a good leg position. How on earth do you keep your lower leg on their side while doing the box splits?:D To be honest, a better leg position is the furthest thing from my mind as my pelvis fractures:D
Soz, I know this isn't any help, but I couldn't resist it. Good luck.
(And yes, I know you can get a good leg position on them, but only when they aren't wider than they are tall:D)

makes a great excuse for why my leg position isnt so good then - blame the table top with legs.......:D
Seriously, the Treefree sits you in a good position, leg naturally has to be longer and further back like your RI always nagging at you to do! It aches like stink for a few days, but the advantage is that when I revert to treed saddle (Thorowgood griffin cob XW) my leg position is a lot better and more stable, so I sometimes use the treeless as a training aid for me!
