View Full Version : A daft addition to the "I fell off" crowd.

OK, I've been looking at the "I fell off threads and really feeling for the victims. I've only ever come off twice in 12 years of riding. but it remains one of my biggest fears.
So far, me and new, opinionated mare are doing fine and I haven't come off during the spooks, bucks and napping. However, I have ended up bruised and this is the woeful tale.
I drove home after a stroppy schooling session, I'd done fine and won the battles and was feeling really proud of myself. Not only that, but I had done it all without being scared.
Parked the car in my driveway, stopped the engine, opened the door and tried to get out. I didn't notice that my legs were ignoring my brain and I keeled over out of the car, still in a sitting position and landed on the deck. I knew exactly what had happened and I was too fed up to do anything about it so I lay there in my sitting position on my side, lit a ciggie, took a huge drag on it then phoned hubby who was in the house to come and get me.
He dashed out, thinking there was something deadly wrong, stopped in his tracks when he saw me, knew immediately what had happened (he knows me too well, I can't get socks on without falling over) and nearly laughed himself into a hernia.
I have a sore hip and shoulder and absolutely not a shred of dignity left.
So all of you who have fallen off a horsie, spare a thought for this poor sod who managed to fall off the driver's seat of her car:rolleyes:

Oh Trixie bless and ouch! :D I too get the 'falling over while putting socks on' thing as i can fall over my own feet (only a size3 ) So sorry that you made me giggle so i am sparing you all my thoughts as that could soooo easily happen to me one day. Hope your body and ego recover soon!

Funny. I hope your ok to drive again & get back in that drivers seat! Feel better soon:) I just got back into riding and this was my second fall ever. Luckily I was able to get back on and wasn't too spooked by the whole ordeal.

That made me laugh! It also reminded me of the time I was watching someone riding in the menage and walking at the same time, unfortunately I tripped over a pallette and landed face down in the grungiest, smelliest puddle on the yard. I've never got up so quick in my life but hubby didn't want me in the car I can tell you:D

lol, that is pretty funny. I think there must be a full moon making all us horsey types fall over whether were in a saddle or not.

That made me laugh out loud (and scare the cat!)
Just picturing you casually lighting a fag and calling the hubby on the mobile was what did it - if you added that scene to the 'hamlet' advert tune it would be a classic.

Trixie, that is hysterical. Thanks for sharing and i hope the bruising is subsiding!
What IS it with the falling off at the moment? My OH fell off for the first time since he started riding (2yrs) the week before last. His horse got a bit overexcited at the prospect of jumping nothing much, and bucked. The actual fall was reasonably gentle as he recognised the inevitable march of gravity and went for the undignified slide off the side, but he apparently tore a muscle in his shoulder along the way and has been in a fair bit of pain on and off since then.
Last week's lesson, i'm getting on with jumping (still about the height of a couple of lunchboxes ) having been reeeeeeallly scared of it until a month or so back, everything is fine one minute and the next i'm staring at the sky. Doncha just *hate* it when that happens! On the plus side, i had a slightly stiff neck for 24hrs and otherwise nary a bruise. On the minus side, my approach was OK, the canter was OK, the jump a little bit on the long side but nothing i've not done before, but something went wrong with the landing and i hit the dirt - great grounds for getting "the fear" again cos there's nothing obvious i can avoid doing in the future! I got straight back on and did the darn jump again, still a bit bumpy, but i really wished i could have a lesson the following day rather than waiting a week for nasty panicky feelings about knocking all my teeth out or breaking my neck to start germinating in my stupid brain...

Trixie I hope you are Ok.:D:D Thanks for telling us.
I managed to trip over a stone, landed in a puddle and broke my arm.:confused: Sat in the puddle 1/2mile from home and had a cry then thought. I have to get up and walk home. :D:Dlol. What a plonker I felt!!
Especially when I had to explain to every one at school how I had my arm in a sling. The kids loved it:D:D

.....too bloody scared to ride :D
Actually, I have no idea how I do it, but I apparently go like a sack of spuds when horse plays up (playing up being defined as breathing:eek:), full weight in saddle, lower back collapses which helps put my weight back without my shoulders going back, so I don't get left behind. I avoid jumping like the plague, hold on to handfuls of mane if the horse so much as sniffs:rolleyes: and if things get really bad (horse moves a hoof) I kick my stirrups away. Then I have no choice but to be sitting deep. Oh and I practice emergency dismounts from the back of my sofa. I've had more falls off my sofa than off horses.:D
Basically my entire riding career has been geared to finding out how to not fall off. Makes you wonder why I bother getting on in the first place. Maybe if I put as much effort into finding out how to ride in the first place I wouldn't spend my life in the saddle having various nervous breakdowns. I suppose you could say that I could panic for my country at the Olympics and probably win a gold.
Also see my new sig....that helps prevent falls.:D

i once was at a venue with pony and trailer and tried to step over the jockey wheel part - got my foot caught and did a rolly polly over it. All in full view of all the other people with trailers and lorries, trouble was i was on my own so had no one to laugh with to hide my embaresment! :o
