has anyone had their horse DNA tested?

i brought my horse 8 months ago and finally got round to updating her passport (yes im a law breaker:D). my vet had found a microchip that her last owners had not told me about when he came out to microchip her so sent the details with the change of owner details.

old owner was meant to forward breeding papers but never got them (no surprise i think they were just happy to be rid of her:o)) i wasnt that bothered either so just took the passport they had got due to 'loosing her paperwork' which was just a basic pleasure horse passport. all very dodgy i know but anyway....

just had a call from man at passport agency they used stating that from the microchip number ive given he believes she should have a breed passport somewhere as the chip was put in a birth and he believes it could have been done for her papers. ive told him the long story:rolleyes: he has told me to get her dna tested so i can get her registered with her breed society and then cancel the passport i have with them:o

basically has anyone had this sort of problem, does anyone know anything about dna tests, how they work, how much it costs etc etc

any help much apprieciated. very confused at the moment:o:D

Ummm... Well i am in the process of having my Friesian DNA tested for her registration but it might not be the same..

All i've had to do is get a sample of her mane which the vet did and filled out for me, as well as putting her microchip number on the forms, then send a sample from her mother, and father (i didnt have to as he's on record already) to the Friesian society...

But as i said, it might be a different procss with passports.

We had a DNA test done on an unreg. gelding, but we had a fairly certain idea who his parents were and one was still alive and the other was a stallion who had been blood tested for his license. So it cost us £40 per DNA test, one for Froggie one for his mum and one for his dad. They all matched and the breed society granted him papers. But you will need some idea of his breeding before you can match his DNA to anything.

The microchip should be sufficient to identify him for the majority of stud books to issue a duplicate set of papers.

Belle (my yearling) is KWPN and was chipped for her breed passport. She is also DNA tested - to prove her parentage. Her dam had to be DNA tested as she is AES rather than KWPN. If I breed another KWPN I wouldn't need to do Mum's DNA again as it is on their records. You should be able to track the microchip to the breed society if it was required by them.

Chances are that if it was breed society required she is probably KWPN (Dutch), Belgian (BWP) or TB(GSB/NTR) as IIRC they are the big studbooks that require chipping for ID purposes and even then it is only horses over a certain age that will be done. (I think Fjord studbook does as well now.)

I would try to trace her via her microchip number first. The chip number should identify the country of origin which helps to narrow the search and then you can often find out what studbook she is registered in and 'who' she actually is.

Different studbooks have different requirements about the DNA testing so see if you can find out what studbook she is registered in first and then give them a call. :)
