Hey, there are no room for experts in the Mature Section. ;) We like to learn new things every day us Mature Riders. :) Dont be scared to learn. It will be very rewarding. Horses are not just about riding. I am one of the rare people that actually enjoy Poo picking. :o

Hi. Hope you find this site as helpful as I do. I hadn't been on a horse in 30 years and started riding again this past summer. It was the best thing I could ever have done for myself.

Welcome, don't think you need any advice on NVQ level 1 other than keep shovelling :D after a while you can achieve a zen state with the sight of lovely clean beds...
In all seriousness it's a great course introducing all the basics also giving experience of loads more horses than you might otherwise handle. Grab every chance you get to work with every horse you can on the yard even if it's only leading to another stable to muck out - it all adds up.
Just thought of 1 - as it's coming up to winter - spare socks!
Just in case you lose a boot in the mud...

Great to have you -nice to have another genuine mature starter. I started age 62 and my OH aged 68, so you are in good company here. OldandNew is another over 60 starter.
It sounds as if your lessons have everything right. I mean having both the lunge lesson and the tacking up and grooming. I made a great effort to learn both sides and not just the riding.
But both sides do depend on being properly taught. If you are shown exactly how to do these things, they get easy.
Can you say what are you scared of?
Is it sitting on the horse? Getting on or off? Or the handling or picking out the feet?
Whatever it is, I think I might tell the person teaching you that you feel uncertain about that particular thng? And ask for detailed guidance.
When I was a little girl, my mother taught me to be scared of horses kicking so I was terrified of picking up horse's feet. I paid for a lesson just to learn to do that. And it has been easy ever since. But I still tend to avoid walking near the back of a horse, just as my Mummy taught me!
I agree that a basic handbook might be a help, (like the BHS stable management Stage 1) to jog your memory between lessons, but there is nothing quite like being shown how and doing it yourself. Although I am a very bookish person, I avoided reading books till I had been learning a couple of years.
You are a lucky lady. Take care, but try not to worry.

Skib do we share a mum!!! Never go round the back of a horse, always be careful of their feet!!! And yes it's stuck!
my part loan is not by any means a kicker but I always stand as far away to the side as I possibly can to do her tail, ok so her feet are about 8-9 inches across don't wanna be on the recievin end, but to be fair she's probably as likely to kick me without reason as I am to kick her, best be safe though, us ladys can be grumps if we think our hair is not goin right :D
Anyways welcome to New rider Old mare, I'm sure you'll find everyone full of great advice and support :D

Welcome to the forum. I started to ride again 6 months ago, with a 40 year break behind me. I am 57 years old and not as young as I used to be. Creak and groan when I walk in the cold weather, but hey, who cares I love riding and I shall do it for as long as possible.
I took a tumble on Sunday from my part loan horse and am due to have a lesson tomorrow. I am not quaking in my boots, but won't be pushing myself to do that which I am uncomfortable with.
Hope you enjoy your stay here, they seem like a nice herd!!

Hello and Welcome. :)
What I'd like to know is who started off this horsey hobby? Was it you, Rarah or Rarahsgirl? :D
I was ashamed of the fact that I had to look at rarah horse from the other side of fence .then when rarahgirl started to ride made me feel even more envious. stopped smoking two years ago .decided to spend money on learning to ride. never had cig since, found new hobbie instead best thing i ever did. Moved house to east coast stoped working started enjoying myself
