Aww hun, it was the other horse that did it, not the one you have looked at. Could you go up with your RI or someone else and go and ride him again? A lesson on him might help your confidence. Or get someone else to ride him and you watch then get on afterwards?
Perhaps you could arrange to go and see / ride him regularly until you get him?

Has the horse you have put a deposit on done anything to make you feel this way or have you just lost confidence from the other horse you rode? How do you truely feel about the horse you are buying?
Do you have an instructor or experienced friend you could take along with you to see the horse. You could watch them ride and perhaps once you see the horse ridden by someone you trust you might feel better about getting on and doing it yourself. However, if you don't feel confident about getting on after that then I think you seriously need to reconsider your decision to buy him, sorry.

I would spend the time between now and january having lots of lessons to rebuild your confidence. Also see if you can visit the horse a few times to restore your faith in him.
Confidence is a fragile thing, but Im sure you'll get it back with some effort :)

I lost my cofidence after a napping running away episode. I found having someone to walk beside me to begin with helps, you will build up confidence as you get to know your new horse. :)
Good luck. Some of the threads on the mature riders section deal with confidence building. Small steps at any one time I read there and thats what I do:D

Take it steady. Perhaps you could see if you can spend time with him on the groud before January, to help build up trust in each other? When you trust him you'll feel more confident. If necessary just ride him at walk with someone next to you ready to hold him if he scares you. Your confidence will come back, unfortunately as we get a little bit older (you are not an oldie!) we worry more...:o:)

i had EXACTLY the same experience!
well maybe overexaggerated there but when i was trying out horses i got on one that was way more of a better horse than i was rider - it ran off with me and took 10mins to stop and only because my RI grabbed its reins.
i then tried jerry out and he was also as good as this horse but a little bit more accepting of my riding. i bought him but i was scared of riding him. i had lessons and yes he trotted uncontrolably and i was tense and thought he would bolt but gues what - he never has.
i would definately have lessons etc but also keep thinking to yourself its not the same horse. what has also helped is when i feel myself getting tense if he picks up the pace i just concentrate on relaxing. i also studied up on how to stop a horse should it bolt - very helpful too as i knew i could takcle it.
another fear i have is riding in the field. i took jerry on our first gallop together with Lucyad and oscar (safest steed around!:D) and he was a true gent - really suprised me and since then i like a weekly gallop! maybe taking him/her for a gallop will help you to enjoy the faster paces again:)
