I've been looking at them.... but ONLY to use when horsey's back is comfy, not while it's sore or while he's not quite muscled up yet ! It may be the saddle that makes some of them sore, but once they're sore a bareback pad isn't going to make them feel better.

Love to hear pros and cons of the various makes from actual users .

Well, I haven't been brave enough to get on my orange monster bareback yet, but it's our NY resolution, so getting one for christmas.

Not sure which one, but am getting one just for security as I've never done it before and he hasn't in years, and because he's a typical TB with a spine and HOOOOOOOOOGE withers (tbh, I dread sitting on it :o).

For whenever Percy's ready, I'd get one to start with too, as he'll appreciate it as well as you :)

A little different, but have a look at this website. I have felt tempted.

I was going to get a bareback pad but they are pretty expensive so I just use a saddle blanket and then put a surcingle over it to hold it on :)
It works really well.

I have the best friends bareback pad. But as has been said previously i certainly wouldn't use a pad or a saddle on a horse lacking muscle or with a sore back. I bought my pad as i'd been waiting a while for my new saddle to arrive and was having to ride bareback. The pad is well worth every penny, makes bareback riding that bit comfier and the suede effect finish means you don't slip slide about too much. This is my one;

its cheating as they have stirrups so not bareback

put it this way - just take your feet out the stirrups
its money for old rope

bare back is bare back--- anything else is an aid

if you want to try bare back for the 1st time
then do a short session stuff your hat on and jump your pony to or from the field-- as that is there focus point - they arnt bothered by you
they want to get to the field or get to the stable --

nope, not all pads have stirrups. Mine is pictured above and it does NOT have any form of stirrup. It's simply a pad that's slightly more secure than a surcingle and polypad IMO. I spent 5 months riding bareback whilst awaiting my saddle and this pad was a godsend. I even ventured out hacking (off road of course ;)) as i felt much more secure in it.

I wouldn't touch the pads that have stirrups because (a) they are not going to be like 'real' stirrups on a real saddle, and (b) i'd be concerned about any pressure points they may cause.

Shoreset, please move your pad further back; the girth strap is now pressing on his withers. Also make sure the front of the pad doesn't dig into his withers - if it feels tight, get a piece of gamgee/fibergee (a square leg wrap) and fold it and place it over the withers, under the edge of the pad.
