Hi there and welcome

I am not sure whether we have riders on here of that young an age - I am sure the youngster will correct me if I am wrong ! :o

Have you tried any other sites more suited for your age group?? My 10 yr old son goes on one or two - And they send you bits in the post, and sell some lovely girl horsey bits and bobs.

Hii :)
I started riding when I was 12 (nearly 13) and joined the board when I was 12 (nearly 13).
I'm now 15, and have been riding for 2 and a half years. :)

My daughter is 10yrs. old and rides. I could ask her if she wanted to 'talk' to you, if that is close enough in age for you. She could get on the computer after school for a few minutes.

I best not tell my son that - he will want to become a member, and then he will be telling everyone my secrets! lol! :):p

i started when i was 7------ am old donkey now

best tip-------- Relax relax relax - be floppy and not as stiff as a board
if stiff or tense you telling the horse to gogogogogogo

so nice and relaxed-- if you still awee bit tense count 12345 etc and breath
relax the horse relaxes and you can learn more
and dont hold on so tight to horse reins or head
make you hands like butter-- nice and soft

For those who dont know, i was meant to be going for my first lesson today, but my friend and i have fell out so i am no longer going to the riding school with her. Fortunately my parents knew i was upset and have therfore (dont know how you spell it) found a different riding school and booked me a half hour lesson to start off.

mount, walk, balance, rising trot, sitting trot, change rein, walk, rising trot, sitting trot, change rein, rising trot. before we got off we did an around the world :D

** Forgot to mention,, I was ABSOLUTELY petrified until i got on.

I know just what u mean! I've 3 days to go to my lesson and can't wait. i'm not a youngster either - I'm 27!!! :D

But you can still love riding at my age and get excited about learning new things. You did a lot in your first lesson - wow - it sounded very busy!! Were you on your own or with a group of people?

horse-mad23
17th Dec 2007, 03:03 PM
I was in a group with 3 other people! the lesson was only half an hour though! Wish it was an hour but youu know cant aford it :( Just 1 moree dayy :):):)

I have private lessons for 45mins once a fortnight - that's as much as I can afford. I'd be happy to share my lesson with someone cos that'd extend it to an hour for the same price, but sadly no one else is wanting lessons midweek when it suits me. :(

But then again I do get my RI's full attention and she is an excellent teacher. I really enjoy quality time and have learned loads since I started going to this RS!! :D

Happy lesson tomorrow! :)

I had a few lessons when I was about 9 year old. I was supposedly a natural at it and they wanted me cantering in the third lesson. I got scared and quit. Restarted at age 12, bought my own horse named Willie at 13, and now I am 16 years old.

So yes I really started when I was 12.

I'm fourteen and have been ridin for three and a half years. I started when I was eleven.
Some tips
-Do not be intimidated by the fact that so many of the kids who are begginners are younger than you and people younger than you are better than you and may seem to be progressing faster. This worried me until I figured out that most of these kids grew up around horses, have been riding since before they could walk, and are progressing faster because they ride many times a week.
-Make sure you find an instructor who won't treat you the same as a six year old begginner. You have a different mental capacity, you can learn quicker, you know what diagonal lines are(a little kid in my lesson got very confused once with the diagonal line of jumps and kept doing the wrong ones, good thing they were all little.) and you can understand things quicker without constant repitition of basic things. Your instructor should not treat you as a little kid but should also not expect you to do things you aren't capable of.
sorry this was so long.

i will be 16 in may. I rode my first horse when i was 3 on a lead line bareback and fell off. i then rented out horses when ever i could i had them at all my birthday parties then at 12 i started riding professionally i started galloping soon enough by accident. few more tips- never buy a green broke filly half starved to death as a beginners horse it ends with heartbreak, broken bones and a horse that knows its in control. i was one of those riders that learned alot by mistake and theres nothing more better than broken bones and brusing to remind you to never do that again:rolleyes:. by the way you can talk to me aswell even if i am older.

are lessons in the UK and such areas really that pricey? i get at least(usually end up being more) an hour private lesson with a world champion instructor for around 15 pounds or a dressage trainer with school masters for around 21 pounds all private and my first riding instructor charged 9 pounds. Maybe in north america we are just over paid i don't know but my lessons are pretty cheap and i usually stay the whole day (i really think my RI should get paid more though).

around the worlds i did one of those on my first riding lessons too! except i had to cross over a western saddle and believe me that is very hard.

My lessons are £6 for half an hour on introductory lessons (For Beginners) i go every week:D £15 an hour and hopefully next weekend will be going on an all day corse, 2 hours of riding, plaiting, tack cleaning and stable maintenance. These are all group lessons.

I'm 15 (16 in march) I've ridden since I was 5 - and i can still remember my first lessons - my earliest memories are all pony-related :p! Nearly 11 years on, I'm still pretty much an ameteur thanks to push-button horses ;) (My RI says 'shoulder-in', i blow a raspberry lol). Glad you're enjoying your time around horses, it's just the best thing in the world :D!

Wow you get good prices! My lessons are £18.50 for an hour group lesson - a private hour with our head RI is, like £47. I get my RI's pearls of wisdom for free, though!
