Well Hovis was actually quite up for it yesterday, compared with last week's hard work to get him going - either that or he has just accepted I am not going to let him get away with being lazy!

We now get left alone to warm up while Hayley sets out the arena with poles, etc. so I did a few active walk/halt transitions, followed by some trotting on both reins and a canter on both reins - he was brilliant - listening and going into trot and canter at the first nudge!

So Hayley got us doing some more complex work involving circles and shallow and deep loops on the long sides of the arena in both trot and canter. His was so good going into canter and only needed a few squeezes to keep him going round the corners.

He was a bit unbalanced in the deep loops in canter as he was on the wrong lead for the bend to return to the track and he tended to fall back to trot for a step or two before responding to my aid to get back into canter.

We had an "interesting" episode on a left rein circle (his worst rein) in canter over poles - he fell back to trot to negotiate the poles and then immediately back to canter, we did about 5 circles like this, despite me nudging, tapping with the whip and growling "go on" at him each time we approached the poles.
On the 6th attempt we actually got the canter over the poles but he tripped on the last one ! His head, neck & shoulders suddenly dropped and I followed, wrapping my arms round his neck and whispering in his ear "whoaaa", "staaaaand", so we went from canter to trot to walk to stand in about 5 seconds, with me bear hugging his neck. Once we had stopped, I was able to sit up and lever myself back into the saddle! :o

After this we managed to canter over the poles on the right rein with absolutely no trouble at all!

At the end of the lesson Hayley said my balance had been fine (except for the incident) and that in future she expects me to be able to get on any new horse and find my balance within the 5 minute warm up. She also said that Tetley and Hovis are the most unbalanced horses in the school - I think she deliberately got me on these two to help with my balance, we shall see! ;)

Wow, love hearing your updates (So much better than mine  NONE :o).
Your updates are so interesting and it sounds like you are having so much fun.

I would love to see some piccies (can't see video at the mome sadly).

A balanced ride is so lovely, and the more balanced rides you have the nicer and smoother your rides are, and the more you love balanced horse's compared to unbalanced horses. I know one time I rode a really well balanced pony out in the bush riding up and down hills (full speed), and I know I would never have been able to handle that if the horse underneath me wasn't balanced, also having that horse balanced meant, for me being totally unused to riding up and down really steep hills, finding my own path while looking for cattle, I could totally trust that horse underneath me, it was the first time I had totally trusted a horse I was riding on for MONTHS!!!!! And I can tell you I absolutely loved that ride, and want to ride that horse, and do that again.

lovely update, that has gotten me thinking about whether the pony I ride is balanced or not. I would say he is more balanced then the other horses I have ridden in the past but he is not fully balanced with everything (for example he plows through jumps, flopping at them) but luckily I don't have to jump him :p :D

Look forward to the next update. :D

Not a good picture as I set the video cam up a fair way off the school so as not to spook the horses.

Nice one Chris, but stick to bear hugging - tree hugging hurts especially when attached to horses! I don't have riding school lessons anymore (stopped earlier this year on getting my boy - TB's cost a packet to run) and have just started having an RI come to my yard, but do miss the joviality of lessons especially group ones where you can have a laugh! Perhaps I ought to start back again on a fortnightly basis...trouble is I know all the naughty and unbalanced ones at my school! E...

Oumbagirl, what did you mean by sticking to bear hugging - tree hugging hurts?

Nah - so far I have only dismounted intentionally. Even that episode didn't faze me - I felt absolutely fine and my reaction was pure instinct - there was no way I was letting go of my grip till he stopped - I even still had one stirrup!! We went straight on to canter over the poles again on the other rein - didn't give it a second thought!

cwb its because your barrel jump is at an angle and the distance is wrong to approach as to sharp a bend for you and the horse
and if you new to jumping what you dont want to learn is how to cut corners
if you cant and dont know how to keep him straight

the grid - if you had taken out the last canter pole and put the jump there at the end - then you be much better off, as the horse learns to be more balanced into approach and you can aim for the middle of the jump
and then move the horse off to the left- or right when hes landed
that would teach him to carry on aafter a jump and also to end the jump right or left after a couple of paces
if th horse rushes to the jump then put a canter pole behind or on the other side
then the horse learns to slow down

ok

sorry - the pics aren't that clear - there was no jump, just three canter poles.

He kept on trotting the poles instead of cantering, at the 7th attempt he stayed in canter but hit the poles and tripped a bit!!

Now on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQbIgdDiI6k

if you going to do that with a grid then do it lenghtways of the areana and not width way s its to short for the horse

CWB I think you deserve a medal for staying on!! I've fallen off 3 times now, twice at a canter and once at trot when the horse spooked badly. But it's always best to get straight back on again and try to learn from your experience. Good for You!!:D
