Hi, really need help on how to fasten boots :o I know that a single fastening should go from front to back but what if they have double fastenings? I had a look at my BHS Stage 2 book & it doesn't explain it very clearly, the Stage 1 book doesn't explain it at all. I need the idiot's guide :)

Does the underside strap go from front to back & the top ones from back to front? Also in some books it mentions doing up the middle strap first, why? Also do longer boots always go on the hind legs? I've also noticed that sometimes when I put boots on a horse they don't do up properly at the bottom, what am I doing wrong? I'd probably work it out for myself if I didn't have to skip out, groom & tack up within 15 mins , sorry a bit of a rant there :D

If there's more than one fastening, it should be the outer one which faces to the back.
I have found that doing up the middle strap first makes it easier to keep the boot in position before I do up the others, but it's not necessary.
If you have two pairs of similar boots - like a full set of 4 brushing boots which all look the same - it is likely that the back pair will be slightly longer.
If you can't do up the bottom strap but the others fasten fine, you probably have the boot a bit too low.

im glad someone asked this! i have a pair of woof wear double touch and close boots that ive had for years a dug out again and couldn't work out which way round to put them on :o
i thought that if you were putting normal boots on, you'd fasten front to back so as not to pull on the tendon anywhere, so following that logic, the first straps on double boots would go front to back and the second ones back to front - this also seemed to follow as the tendon guardy bit was longer at the back than the front.

i am truly confuzzled i'm afraid! :o

Some boots can be quite confusing, when I encounter them I just put them on the way I think is best, and if they stay in position - or nobody tells me they're on wrong! - I assume they're correct  But I have always had outer straps facing backwards.

woof boots, first velcro strap is back to front, then top strap is front to back. But the equilibrium boots are the opposite (there is a label in the boot telling you which is the 'front' of the boot, so in that case, first strap is front to back, and second back to front (if that makes sense?!).

Thanks for everyone's responses :) I'll have a look next time to see if there is a label that explains it, but the boots belong to the college & look like an old pair so might not have a label anymore.

Ditto that Roofio, that's what I think, that the straps that you do up first are fastened front to back because I thought that these straps (because they're closest to the horse's skin) shouldn't put pressure on the tendons, then the top straps go back to front. Or do the top straps apply the most pressure? Which way should I do it for when I do my BHS exam?

Also if the material of the boots overlap when the 2 sides meet, then should the overlapping bit go under or over? I've been searching google for ages to find a website that explains this, no luck :o Sorry to be a nuisance.

I usually put it over.

I was told that this 'fasten to back' theory comes from when they had buckles and is less relevant these days with velcro, SO, if the boots are both identical then it really doesn't matter. Obviously some do have the strike pads shaped to fit a particular way and if these are double touch then do the way that fits best
