is it bad to leave it on, instead of dabbing off excess?

No, they actually recommended to me when I had my WLD balm stolen (yes, they even steal stuff like that, pathetic idiots!) that I could leave the soap on rather than wash it off :D Which reminds me, I need to get some more!

thanks :) i never have anything handy to dab it off his feet so i usually just do it, leave it on and feed him then do the balm after he's finished.

I scrub the hoof with the soap so it goes good & foamy, then just leave it - I never wash it off. I've been doing this a couple of times a week for about a year & Mrs P's feet have been pretty much infection-free :)

ETA: the balm is quite oily so it's best to dry the areas you're going to treat before you apply it. Once you're on top of the infection you can just use the soap on it's own to keep it at bay, and keep the balm as a 'just in case'.
