Hi everyone,

i have a (probably very silly) question regarding bandaging horse's legs, as in from an injury. How tight should the bandage be? I know it needs to be firm but not too tight, but just how firm should it be? I've never been in the situation where i've had to bandage a horse, but i would not like to get it wrong!! I also realise that the bandage must have a padding like cotton wool under it- how thick does this need to be?

Thanks for your help!

you usually get the padding in rolls, so it's as thick as it needs to be. you bandage tight enough to stay on, but you need to be able to easily get a finger under it. it's also important it's the same tightness all the way down the bandage, otherwise the horse will get pressure sores.

I agree with Es. You have to make sure the pressure is even, and the bandage is not fitted too tight or too loose, or it will do more harm then good. Even if say, you're wrapping your horses legs for exersize; the bandages have to be equal pressure in both legs, or it will feel off to the horse (and could cause problems).

If you have the benefit of it, get an experienced horseperson who's used to wrapping bandages, or even a vet, to show you how and watch you do it a few times. First time bandaging can be hard since you're trying to coordinate your moves.
