Question in title really :p

What rugs are you putting on in the day and night? Make and filling if you know it
Also when its really cold what weight turnout do you use and do you layer or just use one good heavyweight??

I've just found out my hubby is buying my horse a shires stormcheeta combo for christmas which has a 400g filling so was wondering if that would be enough for the winter or if i would need another layer?
At the moment i am using a 300g shires stormbreaker turnout.

Alot depends on your horse and the weather we're gonna have this winter !!

I'm actually using a WB orican (360 g) on one (day and night) and a WB Landa (220 g) on the other (only during the day and when turned out, nothing in the stable). Both are unclipped ....

I have the WB Taka (400 g) for temperatures "under 0" and have already piled up rugs when we had minus 13 ...

Just a lightweight, more to keep the rain and mud off than anything else. I've not quite broken my rug addiction yet to let her go nekkid!

280 gram here at the moment

I have a 300g, 340g and 400 to move up too but don't want to go near them till minus temp

Are yours clipped out too? If so, what clip?

Bay Mare

No, she doesn't really sweat up even though she's not mega fit at the moment so there's no need (plus she lives out 24/7/365 so I prefer not to clip unless I absolutely have to).

Well Red has got a maximum bib clip, he is in a rainsheet during the day and a light light stable rug during the night because of the wind chill in his stable.

When it's cold and wet he has his highlander lightweight. None of ours have been put in anything heavier than 150g yet.

At the moment I seem to be altering rugs every few days because the damn weather can't settle down

Jim was hunter clipped about 6 weeks ago so has grown back a fair amount of coat. Not shaggy by any means though, he doesn't grow a heavy coat. He hates being cold. Today he was in a 280g full neck turnout, tonight he's in a 200g full neck stable rug with a Weatherbeeta thermocell underneath.

Little Un isn't clipped, is quite hairy & tends to be a warm person so is quite happy naked at the moment.

Jim will definately wear layers when the weather gets colder, he has a couple of good heavyweights but when it's cold they aren't enough to keep him happy. LU won't need layers unless the weather turns unbelievably bad. Last winter he only wore his high neck middle/heavyweight a couple of times in the worst weather, most of the time he was happy either naked or in a LW to keep the wet off his back.

None! For two reasons. I'm currently horseless in Korea. And secondly, it's summer back home so Cheeky is completely naked!;)

400grams should be MORE than enough on it's own! i have a 450gram goliath rug and on my blanket clipped cob in the depth of winter (we usually get proper winters up here) it's more than enough to keep him cozy and he's a total wuss.

Tobs is on a m/w stable rug overnights, and a m/w high neck turnout during the day. He had his heavyweight on on sunday but only coz it was very cold and he'd got very sweaty in our lesson. Youngster is in a rain sheet and a 180gram stable rug.

both of my unclipped arabs are out with 200g slumberdowns on. both have a neck rug on but on dry days harry gets his off - i put it on to stop the rain going down his neck.
as with EB we get "proper winters" (well most years ;)) and when its super cold dawn will have a 350 (or is it 385g?) masta ballistic on... harry will be lucky to get a fleece under his current rug :p

Today it's 13 degrees so relatively mild. Shad has lw Saxon stable rug under his WB landa lw combo. At night he has saxon or mw WB stable rug.

If chilly during day he has Shires Highlander combo 200g. When it starts getting as low as 3 or below in day he'll have Shires Typhoon combo on in day, 400g!!!! Toasty :)

All my horses are not clipped.

I'm in livery so sadly at the moment I have to do a day/night compremise.

Keeva (cob type) - Weatherbeeta Landa (with shires lightweight turnout if cold)

Diesel (Sports Horse) - Weatherbeeta fusion under weatherbeeta taka

Skye (TB) - Shires Stormcheeta

Missi (fine bred pony) - Weatherbeeta Orican with middleweight turnout on top.

So all are unclipped yet have a huge variation on rugs to keep them warm! I just play it by ear. Thankfully, Diesel and Keeva share rugs, so Keeva gets Diesel's heavier hand-me-downs when the weather gets colder!

CurlyWurlyRach

heavyweight WB Orican full neck in the day

Two stable rugs (one with neck) which add up to 315g at night

She's a hunter clipped TB.

I don't like HW rugs personally - i find them too heavy and this can make them rub. I much prefer to layer two or even three rugs, i.e. a cooler/fleece and LW/MW rug - then you can adjust the weight according to the weather.

My id/tb gelding wears a landa medium / light i think it is just over 100g all the time.
The mare has a landa high neck medium 200g on all the time.
My shetland is naked all year none of the horses are clipped and they live out 24/7.

urm not clipped and nekkid, unless I want to ride in the evening and have no energy to groom a thick layer of mud off so I stick a rainsheet on, but thats only once so far...

other has been clipped and has a waffle on at night and a rainsheet in the day - hes a bit more of a wuss anyway than Silver (who is just hardcore).

Silv is getting clipped soon i.e. when I can be bothered, and will go to a rainsheet during the day and probably waffle/40g stable rug at night.

When in the stabel he has nothing on as it is totally enclosed with no drafts but when he is living out he goes between a 180g standard neck turnout and a 240 combo turnout depending on the temp and weather.

I have all the way up to 400g rugs but they will be used once he is clipped out. he only has a bib and belly at the mo

I feel mean.. my boy is in over night with only a fleece on.:o He has a MW Mark Todd turnout on when he's out during the day. He had a little bib clip done about a month ago but is still pretty hairy.

My two are unclipped and out 24/7. One is naked but may stick a l/w on her soon to keep the mud off for convenience when i ride in a morning although they've just had a fortnight off!! The other is in a m/w at the moment as she has been feeling the cold this year and dropped alot of weight but is boing well in this. I use mastas for both of them as they are reasonably priced and good for my chunky girls :p

My two sec D mares are in their Amigo rugs, still too mild here for Rambos.

Mine all live out 24/7 - the other 3 are unrugged.

Lacey is in a 200grm Amigo turnout and i have just bought her a neck cover for it.

Thinking about getting her a 300grm for depths of winter but thats as much as she'll get lol. Lacey is trace clipped.

Claret has no rugs but a thick woolly coat.

both live out 24/7

Well the weather's cerrtainly changed & so has my rugging!

Jim now has a 400g full neck turnout on in the day (though it's a few years old & I don't think it's quite as warm as it used to be) & at night he's wearing a 400g full neck stable rug plus a standard neck HW over the top.

Little Un is still naked in the day while it's dry & not too windy but he's got a stable rug on at night. I'm not sure of the filling as it was given to me but I'm guessing it's about 300g.

Well mine is definately much more heavily rugged than most. She currently has on a 250g mark todd under rug and a 450g anky stable rug during the day and night, fold neck back during the day. When turned out has a 400g full neck turnout. Only goes out for a couple of hours twice a week as refuses to go down the field otherwise. Ahe just stands at the gate nickering at everyone freezing her butt off.
When it drops colder she will also have a 300g weatherbeeta on top of her mark todd and anky, so thats 700g at mo and will be 1000g when very cold.
Also she is has a chaser clip. And keep her well rugged so it doesn't grow back as it cost me £50 in sedation alone to get that much off of her. Unfortunately have to clip her as she works hard, and grows a coat of a polar bear. She could live out unrugged with the coat she grows, but takes two days to dry, and thats no exageration, have tried.

I gave in about three days ago and put a rug on. Its a wetherbeeta lightweight complete with neck peice. However when this cold snap is over its coming off. He is rather fat at the moment. In order to get the rug done up I had to extend the length of the straps underneath his belly, by an additional 6 inchs. So I think he needs to loose a bit.
Mind the YO brought her horses back yesterday as they have been away for a few months, so hopefully he will start to loose a bit when then get turned in together in a few days, hopefully then he will use a bit of energy and weight trying to escape from then.

Just upgraded Tyler to his HW turnout rug. Saw it was -5 this morning and it didnt seem fair to leave him with a lightweight. Has only has a trace clip, but that belly can get cold lol.

Has his HW on in the stable as it has been rather chilly. He seems more comfortable with it on so happy to leave it.

Light weight for the field and another light weight in the stable although I've put his fleece on underneath it the last couple of nights because it's so cold even though his stable is indoors and totally enclosed I still worry he'll get a chill.

Nookster and I's babies are out in their 400gm rugs today it was that cold  We were hoping to keep them back for the chilly weather but when they were turned out this morning it was -8!

Daffy has a fleece on in his stable tonight because he looked slightly tucked up when he came in. This is the first he's been rugged though, he wasn't out in the field earlier.

My boy has a rhino wug plus turnout by day think its 360g Then by night in the stable he has a weatherbeeta think 250g a duvet and rhino stable 350g. He is clipped out tho and really feels the cold. My mare have a master full neck 380g, the pony taka 400g as she is a old girl and the foal a amigo middle weight. x:D

Mrs P is out 24/7 in a 200g turnout without a neck cover. She's had a chaser clip. I reckon she'd probably be OK in her 100g rug but the 200g seems to be a better fit over her wither so I've decided to keep her in that for the time being.
