I am a proud new owner of a lovely chestnut with a gorgeous smooth shiny coat. The only thing is that she has two patches of fur on either side of her flanks way at the back (sides of her bum) that are always ruffled up as though she had brushed the fur wrongways and then sat on it. I wonder if she brushes against the stall wall and stays like that for long periods or if this is happening when she lays down and rubs the coat backwards.
Anyway, the patches are always mussed up and no amout of brushing smoothes it down. I have tried wetting it down but it is extremely persistent. What could she be doing to cause this and how can I fix it? It is purely cosmetic but it is driving me loonie!

Oh! I know what you're talking about. My horse gets that all the time. There isn't really a way to fix it, except brushing it the right way with the hard brushes and a curry comb. It does get better, but it's just wrinkly hair. Hope that helps!

Congrats on your new baby. Must be so exciting.
Sorry can't help much on the other problem 'cept to say just brush it as best you can.

She probably rubs hear rear on the stall or a gate. Basically, as everyone else said, just keep brushing it.

Hi there
See if you can catch her rubbing her tail. Are you sure she is worm free, doesn't have any allergies, or any other irritation? If you remove the cause, you remove the ruffled hair. It may be it's just a habit, but try rubbing some calamine lotion over the area. Otherwise, dab a little vaseline on the area, then brush it down. I find that works with stubborn ruffly bits.
