View Full Version : How long should it take to condition her?

I know that over winter Queen will be just relaxing in the pasture with the other mares, with only minimal riding and work done until things thaw out here...but I'd like to get her fit (and myself) for a ride next summer. It's not an endurance ride, more of about 10-12 miles (16-19 km) round trip. There are some hills, nothing huge, though. There's a nice little horse rider's campground that I'd like to ride off to in the morning, stable her (they have stalls and such there) for an hour or two while we have a little relaxing picnic, then ride back. I'd imagine it won't take long (or much) to build her up for it, but I'd like to know what kind of plans I need to make. Realistically, I'll probably be able to ride 2-3 times per week, once the weather warms and dries up.

I suppose you could bundle up and do in hand walks through the snow... good for you too! Or, long lining around the pasture or farm?

I would enjoy working her over winter, but for the last couple weeks, the driveway has been mostly ice, and as of yesterday, it's bad enough I won't even take her from the pasture. And I can't really work her in the pasture, as there are 6 or so other mares out there, some of whom have a bit of an attitude...I'd hate to go out, try to work her, and someone gets kicked, or strained on the uneven, icy ground. :(
