This is Tiffany's first winter living out - after only 2 days she developed really bad mud fever on one of her hind fetlocks.

its deep and has developed puss. been treating it for the past week but now she's resting it and is funny about it being touched.

stabling her is not an option and obviously i dont want more mud getting to it so i was going to put keratex on it and then poltice(sp) it - is that the best plan or is there any other wau i can treat it?

thanks:)

wouldn't like to advise on this one, but will bump it up for you :)

I'd be getting a vet out to look. It sounds like it's infected and may need antibiotics - if an infection gets deep enough and involves the joint, it can be incredibly difficult to treat. I have known horses that had to be PTS because of infection in a joint. Not saying that's your case, but I'd still rather have my vet check it out.

Would advise vet as well for antibiotics. Voltan came up with mud fever badly as well. I also got flamazine (antibiotic cream?) to put on. Best thing tho is to remove them from the mud until skin heals.

I'd be tempted not to keratex (moreapreventative no?) but would poultice.

SInce then i have vol on 'think mud' supplement (not sure if this actually helps) and equilibrium close contact turn out boots. Still comes up tho from time to time.

Hope tiff gets better soon

I recommend Camrosa Ointment!

:-)

Yeah, get the vet out; it may be infected, which would be a bad thing...
In the mean time, try cleaning it, using hydrogen peroxide, or iodine, then Furazone, or whatever other ointment people use, put cotton stuff over it, and vetwrap it, to keep it clean.

on sunday i went down armed with **GreyGurlie** and my medical kit!!

she was really sore hence GG had to help me hold her. i cleaned it with liquid savlon, couldnt get many scabs off though. then put keratex on (nookster - its a preventative and a cure) and then put sudo cream on. Then i put animalintex(sp) on, followed by vet gamgee, followed by vetwrap and then tape!

she had the farrier out yesterday who said she was slightly lame - so it either was becuase she didnt like moving her fetlock or because she had a loose shoe in front and that leg had been compensating.

anyways i went up today to change the dressging and found she wasnt lame and didnt mind me cutting the dressing off (odd as i thought she would try to kill me after sunday's antics). got it off and couldnt believe what i saw...the wound has healed, the scabs are off and there's nice smooth skin:eek:

not sure how she managed to heal it that quickly but i was very very proud of her!!
