View Full Version : Does she look thin? *pic*

I was just looking at the pics I took yesterday, and I realize they're from the front, whereas most of the photos I've taken are from the side, or different lighting, etc...anyhow, maybe it's just the lighting, but Queen looks kinda skinny in these. I know it's hard to tell past the thicker winter coat, lousy lighting, etc....but what do you think? I'd rather keep her a LITTLE heavier instead of trying to get her to gain over winter.

I'm using the shadowing on her ribs as a guage...

looks fine to me.... my mare is thinner than that and i'm trying to get weight on her but she needs muscle and i can't work her so can't get her to gain muscle
something to remember is that a thin horse is easier to warm up than a fat horse if they get really cold... however i wouldn't say she looks thin.

Have you got any pics from the side?

I think she looks fine in that pic. Nice peachy bottom;)

She's a gorgeous colour by the way:)

I've got side pics, but it's probably just me being paranoid, as usual. *lol* I just read so much about horses losing weight over winter, and how they can get thin before you really SEE it because of the heavy coat...actually, being as she's young yet, and hardly doing anything other than being a pasture ornament, she's probably got PLENTY of food going into her belly to keep her at a healthy weight. I'll have to take a closer look and feel tomorrow when we go out to see her.

another thing is that even if she is a tad thin by the end of winter the spring grass usually adds a lot weight quickly... horses have evolved to survive when thin as they know there will be food on the way when the season changes - as your horse isn't working i wouldn't worry as much as she is probably using a lot less energy compared to intake than it appears. unles there was dramatic weight loss i wouldn't be too concerned but as always, its hard to tell from a photo and you know your horse best :)

*LOL* I couldn't believe her mane at first....fell in love with that as well as the rest of the package. ;) Here are a couple photos...I'm such a proud momma.

I took this one as proof of how tolerant she can be....I was seeing how she reacted to jinglebells around her neck...she couldn't care less. :D

Looks fine to me, we try and get ours to slim down over the winter so they don't turn into Jabba the hut on spring grass!!:D

I hadn't THOUGHT her to be skinny (or a little in need of more feed) until I saw her from some, apparently, goofy angles. I really worry, since where she's currently stabled has lousy hay...and with the snow and ice, there's no grass to speak of, which keeps me concerned over her health during winter. HOWEVER....we're looking to change stables to this FANTASTIC place up the road......I've got my fingers crossed!

she isn't underweight, she needs to tone up though and it will make all the difference! She is absolutely gorgeous though can I have her?

Join the club. No grass out and not the best quality hay. But alex still looks like a mare in foal!!! Its the riding i need to slim him down but my health is making me struggle with this atm. Dont wory about her though, she looks to me like she is nice.:)

Really she's not underweight "skinny" or poor looking. The last thing you want at this time of year is a wobble bottom, come spring she'll balloon!

Wobble bottom.....*lol* I've never heard that term before.
No, I don't want her TOO heavy...that's for certain. And no, Back2Black, you can't have her. :p Hopefully the new barn we're going to (if the owner will still have us after having met myself and OH!) will give us a better chance to tone us up before spring!
Thank you, everyone...I guess I'm just paranoid over my "baby"s first winter with us!!

Frances' horse is a wobble bottom! We are hoping the winter will slim him down a bit. :D :D

Fákur, on the other hand is just big boned! ;) and handsome with it!

I think Frances has the incriminating picture of Fákur! :o

after watching her butt for the better part of a 3 hour ride, I got a GOOD look at her flabby hips. *lol* I'm not concerned any longer about her being too skinny, now it's just going to be regular workouts for us both!
