So I went to get Queen today, but decided to just meet her in the pasture, as the area by the gate was ALL ice, and most of the front of the pasture was, also. We met about halfway (it was cute, she now COMES when I call!! :D ), and I saw iceballs around her lower legs. There were so many that she JINGLES when she walks! The other mares had some, too, but being as she's got some feathering, she's way worse. Is there anything I can use in the hair on her lower legs to keep it from being so bad?

Salt would dry out her skin....and probably cause all the other mares in the pasture to chase her down for a good lick! I'd like to find something that wouldn't be damaging to her skin or hair, but would keep ice off...I suppose greasy stuff...like oils or something......

If it's icy here i rub goose grease (yes, the genuine thing) into B hooves to stop the ice balling up. It works for a while until whatever surface she's walking on rubs it off.
It might work being rubbed into your mares' feathers - mind you, Wisconsin winters are just a tad colder than over here!

I might have to trim her up a little bit...she went from relatively clean legged over summer (I believe they trimmed her up pre-sale) to rather unkempt looking, leg-wise. At the knee, she's got about 6" of hair...we could cut back to 2-3", easily.
