View Full Version : How about a forum section for 'other animals'?

I find that horse lovers quite often are animal lovers in general.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a small section for other pets?

I would love to be able to talk to other NR people about my goats. I really haven't found a goat board I like quite as well as NR.
And have you looked at Guinea Pig Boards? Woah! Vicious!!! No Thanks. I'd rather stay amongst the calm and friendly people at NR.

I don't have rabbits but I think we have quite a few rabbit lovers on here. And of course almost any horse owner also has a dog and/or cat.

It might even open up new advertising opportunities for NR so it's not entirely wasted space...

What do you think?

I have thought about asking for one before but I never got around to it. I agree I think it would be a very good idea. Horse riders/owners are almost always other animal owners/lovers and having a separate section would help reduce OT posts in other sections without having to delete them as they are usually important to the OP or popular to the other NR members.

Please can we have one New Rider? :)

I think alot of O/T posts tend to be about other animals so it would probably be popular :)

yey an other animal section would be handy

i think it would be worthwhile as it is common for O/T post to be on other pets (as martini55 said) and the poster usually tries to encorporate horse to try keeping it on topic rather than because the horse has something to do with it.

I think it would be good. Nice thing to have as we all (well, most of us) seem to be keen animal lovers in general, so it would be nice to hear about them too! :)

KarinUS your right I havent found one as good as NR for goats. If you have any questions your welcome to PM me. I am more or should I say was more goat than horse. I had 80 at one point so I think I should be able to answer any questions.

I just found this site they have a goat section as well as horse, cows and sheep etc etc. http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/

I'll check it out some more but it seems like tons of goat people on there from TX! I am more of a pet goat person and thanks to Home Owners Regulations not allowed to have too many (no breeding...)
Plus I am on a Yahoo Group for Pygmy Goat Owners.
But I'd really, really like it if we could have a section on here for the other pets.
I think it really adds another dimension getting to know people in regards to their other interests besides horses, like I've PM-ed Bebe before about Guinea Pigs, etc.
It's nice to share things with other people that already have something (horses) in common and find out they also have similar other interests... ;)

Posts about other pets always get a view by me (especially little furry guys!). And an interesting thing is that lots of ideas about horses also transfer over to other animals such as being confident when handling them and being consistent, etc.

Also:
Lots of members may ride but not be able to have a horse. They may however own other pets. This would be more inclusive towards those members. :)

I liked the book club and I think lots of people actually read the posts but didn't contribute (which is fine).

Okay, one more time, can you imagine how awesome an NR library catalog would be??? It would not be traced back to anyone since we could all use our NR names but you could sort by category or author or title NR name, etc. I think I could contribute at least 50 titles, as well as OH's books on American indians (full of horses), cowboy fiction and children's books on horses.

Yes, we are just full of awesome Ideas, aren't we?
If NR doesn't snatch them up immediately we will have to split off and start our own... just kidding! :p

That's just spot-on for me (though would love to have my own, wouldnt be able to care for him) & this must be the same for lots of others.

Really :eek: I'm a guinea pig owner myself and since they are such sweet, gentle animals I'd have thought their owners would be the same :D I know I am :)

This would be a great idea. I am looking forward to seeing all those pet pics already. Most horsy folk have a little menagery of other criters following them about. It could be very interesting and amusing.

I would like that too!

It would have helped me on Monday being able to talk to you folk about my dear old cat of 19yrs - I had a bad scare with him and thought he was dying, (he had a terrible fit whilst sleeping) I thought I was going to have to have him put to sleep because for about ten minutes he had no use in his back legs. Fortunately he is fine - he still has 6 of his 9 lives left (thats unless he has had lots of near misses without me knowing)

Yes thats what I thought. But do you know what really upsets me - for all I know he may have had quite a few of these and I havent been aware of them if I am at work or gone out. Poor thing was in shock! However, you would not have known half an hour later that it had happened.

I just a thread where a person was telling volumes about their website. Even though it's a free site it tasted of "Spam" to me.

How about a place for services offered/wanted? Then something like this can go there instead out in main discussion forums.

Geeze, sorry Imeant to make this it's own thread.

This is one of the few ideas about other sections that I actually think is a good idea.

I am actually in favour of having as few sections as posible because it becomes hard to follow all the new posts otherwise.

My bet would be that those of us with horses will have other pets too that we would love to chat about. :D

I can advise on the training of OH's, It is my Expert field... I do use a variety of methods.. my current project is fetching me a brew.. this has progressed very well..sometimes I only have to say( nicely !! shouting dosent work ) 'brewwwwwww pleaaaaseee'

Also If I shout the comand.. '' Dippy ''
a chocolate biscuit appears with my brew!!!

however it does need perfecting as he places the cup right next to the computer..or even over it!!! this could stop NR visiting in a second, and cause myself serious mental breakdown.

Anyway back to pets.....!! :o:D

Guinea Pigs eat hay. And horses do too!

I never thought of that, will have to try it next time. I have 6 of them so they probably eat nearly as much as my horses do.

Why not just start a thread in cafe area. Unfortunatley I don't have any pics on computer of my other pet, a big fluffy golden retriever in receding years. I would love to see other peoples pets animals are so fun un lovely

Why not just start a thread in cafe area.
That's what people do already. I am petitioning for a section specifically for those threads.
Cafe Threads are erased after a week.
If I write about my wallaby one week and nobody with a wallaby is online the thread gets erased in Cafe but in a special section a wallaby lover might come along a week later and respond!
Or one of Magic's guinea pigs gets a cold. In the Cafe area she' ll have to start new threads to let us know if her guinea pig made it or died.
In a pet area anybody who loves cats can enjoy a link to the yumyum cat. In Cafe only whoever logs in that link will know there is a YumYum cat.
In a a pet area she could just update her original thread.
That sort of thing...
