The recent post on Sec A / C pony got me thinking. The Welsh Section D is one of 9 native pony breeds of Britian. However some of them are quite big with individuals reaching over 16.hh but are they classified as a horse or a pony?

They're classified as cobs :) They are Welsh cobs, which are registered in section D of the Welsh Stud Book.

Being a dunce here :o I thought a cob was a type of horse or pony.

So a Welsh D should not be refered to as a horse or pony but as a cob. Is that right? :)

Hmm... a cob *is* a type of horse - but there is a big difference between a show cob and a Welsh cob. But yes, they're referred to as cobs (it does get a bit confusing!)

The Welsh Cob (section D) is a breed. It is over 13.hh and has no upper height limit, although the majority are between 14.2hh - 15.hh. They can be refered to as horse/pony, depending on their size obviously, but are actually a native pony breed. I think they are the only native breed without an upper height limit. Confusing eh?!
