Found these in Dylan's poo this morning:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b124/dollymare5/GetAttachmentaspxfile32e59729-1a6a-.jpg
My friend thinks they're tapeworms...they came out alive...does this mean the wormer isn't effective? Or that it is? Will he need another dose of wormer?

I was planning on putting him out in a paddock within Dolly's field tomorrow but if he's still kicking these out overnight, is it safe to do so (today's day 5 of the Panacur 5 day wormer).

Thanks! :D

id worm hm again, maybe with a stronger dose until he passes normal poo. Keep him in for a day or so and then worm him again,...just to give his tummy a break and so it will have a good effect.
id stay with a strict worming plan for a good few months to ensure hes worm free and healthy

make sure your womer is effective for small tapeworms and somtimes the worms can become resistant to one type of wormer so you might need to change your brand.

I would consult your vet about worming practice if your unsure. If you've wormed him imo you would be best to leave him in to give the wormer time to work and then move him onto a new peice of pasture. If you put him out on the same bit you could be reinfesting and picking up the worms on the paddock and if you put him in another paddock currently being grazed you would be infesting another horse if the wormer hasn't worked.

Obviously if you only have a small paddock for turn out then it won't be possible to rotate your grazing paddocks but you could find you have a constant problem.

Not a great piccy but it looks like a common garden earthworm to me:confused:.

Wrong colour for most worms a horse would have - except redworms but they are tiny, def not that big.

They were found in his paddock 24 hours after I'd last poo picked...so not sure if they came out of him or were there anyway. They were on one mound of poo - couldn't find any worms in any other piles, either in the paddock or the stable...

When they were all squished up and small, they looked a lot like the tapeworm picture in the link Wally posted but didn't look anything like the one coss posted when they stretched out...

I have read that horses are showing resistance to the 5 day wormer. Ask Gill at Westgate.

Those look like earthworms to me.............but I'm no expert:confused:

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Panacur five day wormer doesn't effect tapeworm anyway.

Thanks guys, I'll stop worrying :o Another blonde question now (you can tell Dolly's never been a cause for concern where worms are involved, can't you!) will he be ok to leave now until March when Dolly's due to be wormed with Equest Pramox and do him with the same thing, or would you worm him for tape now as well then Pramox in March?

coss
31st Dec 2007, 02:46 PM
ages ago i made a chart (collect info from various magazine wormer charts) and tapeworms are meant to be active from november to december and april to june... i hope thats correct :o
if it were me... i'd probably wait and give the pramox in march

Tape worm segments??? They do look "ribby"

artemis

Could be roundworm or a segment of tapeworm. Earthworms aren't that colour. If you can't get hold of Gill from Wesgate I would worm again with Equest Pramox - covers everything.

Thanks everyone. The vet's out tomorrow to vaccinate him so I'll ask him to do a worm blood test as well :)

I still go with Earthworm, to me it looks pinky/red - was it?

Tapeworm would be flatter and whiter. I have seen lots of different parasitic worms and it still looks like an earthworm.

Have a look here for what tapeworm would look like.

Also ask your vet tomorrow if there is a resistance to benzimadole based wormers in your area. If so your worming with panucur will be of no benefit at all.

cramarion
4th Jan 2008, 04:06 PM
did you find out what the worm was

cramarion

still curious what the worm was

Showjumper
9th Jan 2008, 05:28 AM
Hi Cramarion, never got a definite confirmation on what the worm was but on talking to the vet, he recommended Equitaping Dylan then Pramoxing in the spring, followed by worm counts throughout the summer.

I am convinced these are earthworms too!

We used to have loads of these in the muck heap at the old yard. If you are still unsure worm him again - are there other horses on the field, because they will need reworming too? But I dont think you need to worry to be honest.

Look like bots to me, mine often pass them within 24 hours of having a wormer, they are common things depending on the area you live in, some have more trouble with bot flies than others, around here they are a nightmare in summer.

By passing the worms, it's proof enough the wormer is working, so I'd not worm again for at least another month, but would definately recommend the worm-counts, I do mine regularly.
