I am hoping to put Sæla in foal this coming spring, she is registered as black. Her mother is a Siver Dapple and her father Chestnut.I have the choice of two stallions one is Blue Dun (preferred) and the other is a Silver Dapple. Could you tell me what colour foal could be please. Pics of Sæla below :D

She carries alleles for both red and black, so if either stallion also has a hidden red gene there's a 25% chance of a chestnut based foal from them.
If neither stallion carries red, you're guaranteed a black based foal.
I'm assuming blue dun is black + dun? A foal from the dun carries a 50% chance of passing dun on, a foal from the silver has a 50% chance of carrying silver.
No chance whatsoever of a bay based foal.
Say both stallions also carry red for the sake of argument.
Blue dun stallion would then give a possibility of chestnut, chestnut dun, black, and blue dun.
Silver dapple would give you a chance of chestnut, chestnut with silver (no visible change to the coat if that's the case - silver only alters black pigment), black, and black with silver (silver dapple).
If they don't carry red, you can take the chestnut options out of the equation.

Thanks for that. All combinations sound good, owner thinks Blue Dun stallion would be the best match for her :D
This is hopefully a link to Blue Dun

Ooh, he's nice! And he is black + dun too. There are various different terms for the same colours, which complicates things from my point of view! A blue dun in the US would be called grullo or grulla. I've also heard them called slate duns, and Fjords have their own terminology too...

Thanks Chev I thought he was too :D
" Nice horse shame about the handler! :D:D:D only joking! ;);)" Hope he's not reading this then :D:D
I've been watching to see how Winnies training is going.:) Sæla made a remarkable recovery (even the vet was worried) all she has to show is some white hairs. She still doesn't look where she's going and I really don't want her hurt again so that is why I'm selling my Haffie and putting her in foal.Did she foal easily last time? I'm planning on an April foal and out in the field hopefully with no intervention. (best laid plans and all that). Will let you know how it goes.

Terribly sorry Sable, but in trying to move this to the colour and genetics section of this forum I inadvertently deleted it and removed your pics... :o no idea how (it's been a long Christmas!)
If you'd like to repost them please do!

Dear old Smári knows I am only joking! :D :D
That is one seriously nice stallion though.
Pleased her knees healed up, Magnùs had a dreadful fall and did a lot of damage to his knees, he recovered really well too.
Winnie appeared one morning while I wasn't looking, did the usual, every 30 minuted had a sneaky peek, then by the next time I looked Winnie was up, washed and ready to go. Sæla was a very kind mum, not a bit foal proud and very trusting for you to handle the foal.
It's interesting that her daughter is also a bit of an accident prone air head to spends too much time wondering what every one else is doing rather than paying attention to what she is doing. very sweet though.

No problem Chev I've got the answer I wanted Thanks, it was only to show you her colour.
Wally ! Thanks for reply I thought she would have been a good mum. She even trips in the field cause she's so busy looking around. If a stallion rides past she dances sideways down the length of the field shouting "Look I'm here, come and get me" It's really funny to watch.I just hope she doesn't pass it on to her next foal:rolleyes:
Her nature is so sweet, cheeky and quirky but never nasty and totally trustworthy and trusting. That is why I'd rather give up riding and sell my Haffie, I couldn't part with her :):)
