A pony at my yard was diagnosed with strangles about 13 weeks ago (poor thing) The vet came a week or so back so take a nasal swab, the po is still germinating!, I'm amazed at how long it is taking to recover. I think the po has just started anti biotics. Anyone else known of a strangles case which goes on for so long?

They can sometimes remain carriers for years.

It can take months, I have read of some staying carriers for life. If it is managed correctly so others don't catch it it shouldn't take as long, this website may give you further info http://www.equine-strangles.co.uk/

My pone doesnt come into the barn, I dont use any of the tools, brooms buckets, dont handle anything to do with the infected pony. Even use a different tap and have vet standard anti bacterial type subtance to cleanse hands with before I even touch my po. I dont walk through the area that the infected po is kept in so I think I'm doing all the right things. Still very frustrating.:(
Now also starting to worry about how much of a nightmare my pony may be after not being out for so long, even though she lives out, she is still likely to ping:eek: all because of someones stupidity:mad:

When my horse had it, it went on for just over 2months this is because my other horse also got it.
I was told by my vet not to give him anything for it and let it run its course.
He only had bute when his temp was very high to help bring it down a little bit.
I ask my vet about antibiotics and she said that it is best not to give it too them and it can take longer for the horse to recover (also may become a carrier)and also cause B**tard Strangles, but i think it all depends on how far they are through the virus.

I'm glad your horses made a full recover:D
I feel so sorry for the ill po. He is stuck in a stable 24/7 the door is too high for him to see over and no other horses in or about :( it must be so low, which wont help him fight the desease.

I so know how you feel, my new mare is currently being swabbed for potential strangles - only has a snotty nose, no temp, swelling or loss of appetite (thankfully). Got 1 negative so far and waiting for the other two - so fingers crossed for mine and yours :D
