Hi everyone,

My friend has an IDxTB (although he looks more TB than ID) and there is also another IDxTB on her yard who I might possibly have an outside chance of sharing in the future. My friend's horse is the most chilled out horse I've ever met (except when there are mares about- he was gelded late!) and is a dream to ride- push button horse if ever there was one. The other possible share horse is a nice horse once he's out of his stable. In the stable is another story- kicking, biting etc but apparently he's absolutely fine in the field so he probably just doesn't like being stabled. He's fairly responsive to ride but quite lazy, although I'd rather a lazy horse than a silly one. So basically I'm looking for a little information about IDxTBs. I know every horse is different but I'm guessing there must be some general traits that they tend to share- like I've heard they tend to be good at showjumping (not that I'm much of a jumper). I've also been told they tend not to be as highly strung as pure TB. Anything else anyone can think of? Also is the IDxTB cross the same as an Irish Sports Horse/ Irish Hunter?

Thanks peeps.

You're right, they do vary a lot both in build & temperament.

Generally it's a cross I like because you tend to get the best of both worlds & miss out on the less desirable traits (feel disloyal saying that as I have an ID who I think the world of!). Most of the ones I've known have tended to have a bit more sense & self-preservation than a TB but without the ID tendancy to ignore the rider because they're absolutely certain they know best, more substance & power than a TB but not the sheer brute strength of an ID. I find they tend to have the affectionate ID temperament that makes them a joy to be around & can do almost any discipline (but then so can both pure breds). They can have a reputation for being a bit quirky, probably from the ID side, but like the ID if you're fair & firm that isn't usually a problem - make them an ally not a servant!

The IDxTB is the traditional Irish Hunter, capable of covering almost any country well & looking classy while doing it.

Tyler is an IDxTB. He is about as laid back as you can get, loves jumping and seems to excel at it, caa produce lovely dressage when he wants to and is quite happy to attempt a XC course.

I would certainly get another IDxTB.

Any others which I have encountered have been fabulous, although I have heard, as said before, that you can get some who are a bit more highly strung.

Hi I own a 6yrs 16.2 Irish Sport Horse mare! Her father is 100% TB and mum is an an irish sport horse she was 3/4 ID 1/4 TB.
They are a great breed, got the large heart of the TB so great stamina and speed and the bravery and temperment (usually) of the ID and of course that extra bit of bone from the ID so they dont look too feeble!!
I use her for SJ and she is great and is a wee sweetie so easy to work with she is full of energy but not a bad bone in her body!
I would buy any other breed other than a ISH they are perfect!

I own an IDxTB and my friend owns one and they are both completely different horses, although could possibly be because my friends is a mare. My gelding is sharp, forward going but v safe. He is by no means a horse who likes affection - too much of a male for that. He is also seriously impatient and doesnt like hanging around. My friends mare has a bit of a lazy streak and although sharp is not what I would call forward going. Loves attention too. Both are good jumpers although I think my friends mare is best - my horse is just in too much of a rush:rolleyes: Here are some pics - my gelding is the bright bay.:)

My Clover is an Irish sports horse. He is basically very safe, but quite opinionated and generally thinks he knows best (embarrassingly he generally does know best) and has a good buck and kick if you disagree. He has an amazing jump and is enormous fun.

My 17hh IDxTB is built like a public toilet and is mainly ID I think tho he has more of a mane/coat.

He is NOT a dressage horse (highest position 8th and we are v proud of that rosette), has the long low ground covering stride of the hunter rather than anything uphill in his paces. he is very fast and balanced at gallop, but might trip in walk due to dawdling. He is not forward going except cross country - his fave trick is going as fast as possible downhill helllllppppp:eek:. He loves jumping esp natural fences and has the famed ID 'fifth leg' to get him out of trouble. Very capable across heavy going esp plough.

He is perfect in any traffic and used as the nanny to all the young/new horses at our yard.

Once a year when hacking alone across fields he will decide to properly cart his rider just for the hell of it -scary for us but he seems to enjoy it thoroughly.

TBH I dont think hes the brightest fairy cake in the high tea, but maybe thats just a cover. What he is, is a good tempered if stubborn perfect weight carrying horse perfect for a couple to share (although Ive bought myself an orange Haffie so we can hack together now).

We love him to bits.

I must admit I do like both TBs and Irish horses but as you said there is no gaurentee they will fit a pattern.

Horses I currently have, mine is 1/2IDx1/4TBx1/4Shire, talented dressage horse with good movement and jumper with the manners of a saint , we have a pure ID mare in the RS who I think is more typical, a short safe 'hunting' stride and a bit heavy in front but also saintly in manners. The third is daughters old Intermediate SH/WH ISH, sire Irish Draft Lakeview Pride, mare we describe as probably having been irish bog pony as offspring is just a 15.2 big pony! Temperamentally she is sharp and bold, not nasty but definately needs a competent rider!

I recently bought an Irish Draught gelding (only 19 months old now) and he too is as thick as pig muck

If he stays this laid back he'll be great for hubby
