Hi, I can't seem to find any info on what "aged" means. I've seen it on feed charts but am not sure what age a horse has to be for it to be classed as aged.

15, typically - it's the age at which (roughly) ageing by teeth wasn't considered accurate, so horse swere just described as aged instead. also inthe past when the terminology came about, their working life was nearly over by then as they were worked so much harder than today's leisure horses.

Vet told me anything over 10 because they could not be accurate about teeth by this age

it varies i think, alot of people will also work from 8 upwards as being aged.

I agree with Jet about aged being at 15. Although, horses are living for much longer than in the past now, so 15 isnt really considered very old these days.

I'd always heard 15. But don't tell my boy that he thinks he's a baby!!

My previous vet said 8 onwards - I thought that was rather discriminating!

ive heard 15...but given todays care of horses it seems a bit appropriate. 15 used to mark the end of a horses working life as they aged alot quicker because of the lack of care compared to today and veterinary treatment wasnt as good or readily available as it is now
15 is not old by any means, and again all horses age differently. some become less supple and active at 15 , while others only are coming into there prime. many of todays top grand prix horses only start competing at grand prix level at about 12 or 13.
something though to bear in mind...

On Tylers Passport it states that any horse 8 years or above is classed as 'Aged'!!!!

My poor boy still has life in him yet, he's only 9 lol

Officially - anything over the ages of 8yrs old because after that you can't be accurate with the teeth (its what you have to write on the passport/vetting) I suppose a hundred years ago 8yrs was old for a horse.

In terms of actually being 'aged' 15yrs is considering starting to get older - its when you can enter veteran classes.
